Seeded Halep in trouble at French Open

Romania's Simona Halep returns the ball during a training session in Paris

Top seed Simona Halep, of Romania, reached the second round of the French Open a day later than expected and not without a fright as she recovered from a slow start to beat American Alison Riske 2-6 6-1 6-1 on Wednesday.

Japan's Kei Nishikori continued his return to Grand Slam action following injury with a topsy-turvy 6-3, 2-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over France's Benoit Paire. Petkovic came into this tournament losing seven of her last nine matches on the main tour and has usually fizzles out around this time in grand slam play.

The match, the last in the first round of the women's draw, was postponed Tuesday before storms drenched Roland Garros.

Halep has experienced a roller-coaster clay-court season so far, having made back-to-back quarter-final exits at Madrid and Stuttgart before finishing as a runner-up in Italian Open.

The Romanian - a two-time finalist at Roland Garros - was well off the pace in the first set, with Riske taking full advantage, but she rallied back in style to win 2-6 6-1 6-1.

The world number one female stepped on court as the clear favourite over the 86th ranked player from Pittsburgh but Alison Riske defied the bookmakers from the outset.

Earlier, Serbia's Djokovic kick started his campaign with a comfortable 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win over Brazil's Rogerio Dutra Silva in an opening-round clash. Dimitrov was two points from defeat against 21-year-old American Jared Donaldson but won 6-7 (2), 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 in a marathon that lasted 4 hours, 19 minutes and featured a couple of underhand serves by the cramping Donaldson.

Facing Spanish qualifier Jaume Munar, the Serb delivered a solid display to prevail 7-6 (1), 6-4, 6-4 and move into the third round for the 13th time.

But Marco Trungelliti, the Argentinian "lucky loser" who drove from Barcelona to take up his last-minute place before beating Australia's Bernard Tomic, was beaten 6-1, 7-6, 6-1 today by Marco Cecchinato of Italy.

Top seed Simona Halep had to wait a day to reach the second round of the French Open whereas Elina Svitolina saw off Roland Garros debutante Viktoria Kuzmova in the second round on Wednesday.

Halep was out of sorts in the first set, making 16 unforced errors and failing to produce the high-intensity style that has become her trademark. "So if I'm ever late to anything, you know why".

Halep said in her post-match interview that she struggled initially against the left-hander's shots with topspin.
