Syrian army controls capital after ousting ISIS

Syrian regime Daesh agree on evacuations from Yarmouk

Syria's army said yesterday it was in full control of the capital Damascus and its outskirts after ousting the Islamic State group, marking a major milestone in the seven-year war.

On Saturday, Syrian government forces and allied fighters from popular defense groups managed to make further advances on terrorists' lines south of the capital, tightening the noose around foreign-backed terror groups.

"Damascus and its surroundings and Damascus countryside and its villages are completely secure areas", the statement said, adding that the army would continue to fight "terrorism" across Syria.

The Syrian military's claim would mean that Damascus and its suburbs are now in complete government control for the first time since the start of the Syrian civil war in March 2011.

The TV earlier quoted an unnamed Syrian military official as saying the two-day truce had been in place to evacuate women, children and the elderly on Sunday night from Hajar al-Aswad.

Around 1,000 fighters remained in the Yarmuk area at the time, of which at least 233 were killed in this month's fighting, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group.

Syrian state media denied a deal was reached to evacuate the militants.

Standing on Route 30, a main street in the Palestinian camp of Yarmuk, a Lieutenant Mohsen Ismail, 22, sighed: "This was the last battle in Damascus".

Pro-regime forces, specifically Palestinian militias, had been fighting since April 19 to recapture Yarmuk, Tadamun, and the nearby districts of Qadam and Hajar al-Aswad from IS.

Damascus residents said warplanes were flying over the city again.

The U.S. military is in much of the east and northeast, which is controlled by Kurdish groups that want autonomy from Damascus.

Assad's forces have been making steady gains since 2015, when Russian launched an air campaign on behalf of his forces.

Al-Ikhbariya TV said a new plan is underway to storm IS-held areas in Hajar al-Aswad, near Yarmouk.

Several buses on Sunday evacuated ISIS militants from their last pockets in southern Damascus to the Syrian Desert in the east under a deal that was reached following weeks of fierce battles.

The regime used similar tactics to clear opposition towns northeast and south of Damascus earlier this month, leaving ISIS as the only armed presence in the capital.

One spokesman for a Free Syrian Army (FSA) rebel faction in the Badia told Syria Direct on Monday that his forces had monitored the arrival of buses allegedly carrying Islamic State members.

Iran and Russian Federation have joined forces in Syria, providing crucial military support to Assad's forces and giving them the upper hand in the civil war.
