Zuckerberg agrees to closed-door talks with MEPs

Facebook shares fall as Zuckerberg agrees to closed EU meeting

Christopher Wylie, the former director of research for Cambridge Analytica and its London-based affiliate company SCL Group, said at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday that his company communicated with Russian firms and operatives that could have facilitated access to data from 87 million U.S. Facebook users.

The closed-door meeting with the Parliament's most senior deputies will anger European lawmakers who were hoping to give Mr Zuckerberg a grilling similar to his 10-hour interrogation in US Congress last month.

"Our citizens deserve a full and detailed explanation", Tajani added.

Last month, Zuckerberg agreed to public sessions with US lawmakers, following a major global privacy scandal related to user data and political ad targeting.

Reports from New Scientist states that the researchers at the University of Cambridge have uploaded user data from 3 million Facebook users onto a shared portal.

"I appreciate that Mark Zuckerberg has made a decision to present himself in front of the representatives of 500 million Europeans", he said.

While Zuckerberg testified last month to the U.S. Congress, he had always been noncommittal on his appearance in Europe, sending his chief technical officer to speak to the British parliament and delaying confirmation of any visit to Brussels.

Jordan urges European Union to recognise East Jerusalem as capital of Palestine
According to Israeli sources many of those killed were affiliated with Hamas and other terrorist organizations. The European Union objected to the embassy move.

Senior lawmakers have "agreed that Mark Zuckerberg should come to clarify issues related to the use of personal data in a meeting with representatives of the European Parliament", the Parliament's leader Antonio Tajani said in a statement.

However, Mark Zuckerberg is only set to attend a meeting behind closed doors, rather than face an open committee hearing.

"I'm glad that mark Zuckerberg has accepted the invitation from the EP and come to Brussels to answer questions about privacy".

But the decision to hold the meeting with the European Parliament behind closed doors has angered others. "It must be a public hearing - why not a Facebook Live?"

Zuckerberg's Brussels visit comes just days ahead when European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will come into play on May 25. "It's a step in the right direction towards restoring confidence".

Damian Collins, the head of the United Kingdom parliament's media committee, has said he hopes Zuckerberg would take advantage of his trip to Europe next week to visit London and testify there as well.

On 7 April 2018, Facebook suspended the myPersonalty app from the Facebook platform as part of its clean up of third party applications and its investigation into misuse of user data.
