First EU-Western Balkan Summit In 15 Years To Focus On Integration

Theresa May takes her seat at dinner with EU leader where the Iran nuclear deal will be discussed

"The summit was a success", President of the European Council Donald Tusk told the press after the event.

"I have no doubts that we will also witness in the future many problems", he said, adding that the European Union was offering no "unrealistic" fast-track to take the six in. They also differ on the potential timeline for accepting new members from the region.

The Iran nuclear deal needs to be not only maintained but also expanded so that it will address the missile issue and Iran's role in the region, French President Emmanuel Macron said upon arrival to the EU - Western Balkans summit in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia.

"No progress was made on enlargement; this is a question that remains for the June EU Summit", German Chancellor Angela Merkel said more bluntly, a few hours earlier.

Borissov highlighted what he saw as the achievements of the summit, such as the agreements concluded, and among other things, the message from Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his counterpart from Skopje, Zoran Zaev, that they had reached a "single option" on resolving the dispute over the use of the name "Macedonia".

"We talked about other infrastructure projects, one of which is the construction of the Nis-Pristina highway".

"I believe that it took us too long since our last meeting in Thessaloniki 15 years ago, and this is why we chose to meet again in two years in Croatia". However, clear support from the Member States to the candidates is requested.

Theresa May is pledging her commitment to the security of Europe at a meeting of European Union leaders in Bulgaria.

Macedonia's accession talks are only being blocked the Greece's age-old veto, which also prevents the Western Balkan state from joining North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

A four-page annex, called the "Sofia Priority Agenda", sets the foundation for the creation of instruments for the support of the rule of law and good governance, including case-based peer-reviewed missions and backing for media pluralism.

The shocks of the last decade also made some European Union founders question eastern expansion and Western Balkans sceptics point to problems in the region ranging from organised crime in Albania to Macedonia's name dispute with European Union state Greece.

Last, but not least, the annex points to the completion of the Regional Electricity Market that will later be integrated within the EU's own Internal Energy Market.

"Part of the financing will come from the EU budget, while the remainder will be provided through loans from the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Investment Bank (EIB)", Tajani said.
