Trump Stokes California's Sanctuary Revolt

Donald Trump

- President Donald Trump called California's sanctuary state law "ridiculous" during a White House meeting with a group of state elected officials who also oppose the mandate aimed at protecting immigrants from deportation.

SB 54, which has been in effect since January 1, limits state and local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

The president thanked the "courageous mayors and sheriffs and local leaders" from across the state who, he said, "bravely resisted California's deadly and unconstitutional sanctuary state laws". "You've gone through a lot too, although it's become quite popular what you are doing".

The Trump Administration Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the state of California back in March contending that three different state laws passed in 2017 violate federal immigration law.

California state Rep. Melissa Melendez, who represents parts of Riverside County, echoed the president's comments. The roundtable featured state and federal officials who oppose the policies protecting immigrants living in the USA illegally.

"It's going to take all of us and I think we're ready to take the fight to California, to say enough's enough".

On Tuesday, the San Diego City Council broke with the county and voted to support California's sanctuary laws.

In the most recent ruling about sanctuary cities, the federal appeals court in Chicago held last month that the federal government can not withhold public safety grants from cities that won't go along with Trump's immigration enforcement policies.

"We need help Mr. President", San Jacinto Mayor Crystal Ruiz said.

Trump made reference to Schaaf on Wednesday and urged Sessions to consider an obstruction of justice charge for her.

"I mean, you talk about obstruction of justice, I would recommend that you look into obstruction of justice for the mayor of Oakland, California, Jeff", Trump said to Sessions who didn't respond.

Last month Trump threatened to shut down the federal government in September if Congress did not provide more funding for his wall.

In a Facebook post on Friday, Mayor Abed wrote that he was "honored to be invited to the White House to meet President Trump" and "proud to share Escondido's successful policies to keep our community safe under the rule of law".

The topic is immigration and California's resistance to the Trump administration's hard-line policies.

The gun law decision split the court's conservatives and liberals in 1997, in keeping with conservatives' complaints about the federal government's overreach and the importance of states' rights.
