Tennis player smashes racket against umpire's chair in post-match tantrum

Karolina Pliskova took to the umpire's chair with her racquet after a bad call

Former world number one Karolina Pliskova is facing a hefty punishment after smashing her racquet on the umpire's chair in an irate outburst over an incorrect call in the second round of the WTA Italian Open.

Pliskova had argued heatedly with umpire Marta Mrozinska after her smash was called out when serving at 30-30 and 5-5 in the final set, and her Greek opponent won the game before serving out the match.

Pliskova's sister, Kristyna, went on to call for the umpire to be banned.

Pliskova did not shake Mrozinska's hand after the match and instead smashed her racket several times against the side of the umpire's chair, breaking the wood. On the next point, Sakkari converted a break then served it out.
