SC upholds Khaleda's bail in graft case

B'desh SC grants bail to ex-PM Zia in graft case

The high court will now resolve by July 31 Zia's appeal that sought to overturn her conviction and a five-year jail term. "As the Appellate Division upheld the High Court order, it would be easy to get the bail in other cases".

Asked to comment on Khaleda's four-month bail, he said: "The four months will be counted from the day when the court granted her bail".

The Appellate Division has upheld a High Court order granting bail to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.

The 72-year-old Bangladesh Nationalist Party chief was sentenced for five years on the 8th of February over the embezzlement of 21 million taka (about 250,000 dollar) in foreign donations meant for the Zia Orphanage Trust.

Zia's lawyer Khandakar Mahbub Hossain told The Daily Star that the 72-year-old chairperson of Bangladesh Nationalist Party can not be released from jail despite Wednesday's judgment, as she has been arrested in three other cases.

The other accused are former lawmaker Kazi Salimul Haque Kamal, businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed, Dr Kamal Uddin Siddiqui, and Khaleda's nephew Mominur Rahman.

The apex court also directed a High Court division bench headed by Justice M Enayetur Rahim to dispose of an appeal, by July 31, filed by the BNP chief, challenging her conviction by a lower court in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

She was then sent to old central jail at Nazimuddin Road in the city on February 8 last.

Khaleda's lawyer Zainul Abedin told the SC that the arguments made by the attorney general had gone in favour of his client as the AG placed some instances, saying that the SC had not interfered in the HC orders that granted bail to the convicted in different cases.

The court also sentenced Khaleda's elder son Tarique Rahman, now in the United Kingdom, and four others to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment each, and fined them a total of Tk 2.10 crore, saying that all the convicts have to pay the fine in equal amounts.
