Net neutrality gets a reprieve, but it could be short-lived

Senator Richard Blumenthal speaks in favor of net neutrality on the Senate floor

It has been a insane year for Net Neutrality.

The US Senate has voted to overturn the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) Restoring Internet Freedom Order which replaced previous net neutrality legislation, passing a bill that has little chance of advancing in the House but offers net neutrality supporters and Democrats a political rallying point for the midterm elections.

In the short space of time since the ruling, many people in the United States have been doing their best to reverse the decision. The FCC's repeal of #NetNeutrality threatens to take that away. They would prefer to see Congress pass bipartisan legislation on net neutrality, including addressing internet privacy issues.

Although the FCC exempted Internet service providers from many aspects of that tougher oversight, such as rate regulation, opponents of the rules said the decision opened the door to onerous federal regulation.

The FCC's move has also sparked legal challenges.

"There's no question that net neutrality is something voters under the age of 40 care a lot about", he said.

The US Senate has voted on Wednesday on whether to reverse a decision by the Trump administration to roll back Obama-era "net neutrality" rules.

The Senate indicated its willingness to appeal the ruling, and applied for a stay-of-execution order. I hereby dismiss it for lacking its merit", he held.

The 52-47 vote, which saw three Republicans vote against their own side, used the Congressional Review Act - one of the checks and balances specifically created to fix problems caused by government agencies headed up by people who think they cool, but they not. Democrats think the fight to restore the rules could be a political victor during November's congressional midterm elections even if the effort is unsuccessful, as it will force Republicans to record a vote against reinstating the rules.

All 49 Democrat senators voted in favour, joined by three Republican senators. Using a CRA expedites the voting process and requires only a majority vote and President Donald Trump's signature to overturn rules. The potential full support of all Democrats would still see the need for 22 Republicans to agree in order for this to happen, which many U.S. analysts view as a tall order. They will face a tough fight in the House because many Republican reps support FCC's regulation.

"That fundamental equality of access is what has made the internet so dynamic", he said on the Senate floor. "A vote against this resolution will be a vote to protect large corporations and special interests, leaving the American public to pay the price". Republicans say the fears about tiered internet access are unfounded and are focused on increasing competition and consumer choice.

The regulations are strongly supported by liberals and online companies including Amazon, Netflix, Facebook and Google, and dozens of smaller Web-based companies.

City council today took a baby step toward ensuring San Antonians have access to a free and open Internet - a concept techies refer to as "net neutrality."

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Wednesday that the solution was for lawmakers to draft Net neutrality legislation "that would safeguard consumers but still prevent regulators from stifling innovation".
