Michigan State University Will Pay $500 Million to Larry Nassar Victims

Michigan State University has reached a $500 million settlement with hundreds of women and girls who say they were sexually assaulted by Dr Larry Nassar in the worst sex-abuse case in sports history

Michigan State University has reached a $500 million settlement with the sexual abuse victims of former faculty member and sports team doctor Larry Nassar, seen here at his January 28 sentencing hearing.

The 332 victims of Larry Nassar who have filed lawsuits so far could each get between $250,000 and $2.5 million from the $500 million settlement with Michigan State University announced today, said one attorney involved in the case. Seventy-five million of those funds will be set aside for future victims to come forward, while the remaining $425 million will be divided among the victims named in the suit. Alison Overholt, an ESPN vice president, says the women and girls who spoke out about how Nassar sexually abused them have shown "what it truly means to speak truth to power". And assuming it becomes final, the settlement will not resolve many other aspects of this situation for Michigan State, which is under investigation by the Education Department and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Olympic gold medalists Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas and McKayla Maroney say they had been victims.

After telling Nassar his sentence, Judge Rosemarie Aquilina responded, "I just signed your death warrant". It does not address claims against U.S. gymnastics, the United States Olympic Committee, Bela and Martha Karolyi, Twistars, John Geddert or any other parties.

Brian Breslin, chairman of the university's board of trustees, released a statement welcoming the end of the litigation and apologising to Nassar's victims and their families. It has no impact on the ligation against USA Gymnastics or the United States Olympic Committee.

"This historic settlement came about through the bravery of more than 300 women and girls who had the courage to stand up and refuse to be silenced", said lead attorney John Manly.

"A rough range is $250,000 to $2.5 million, somewhere around that", said David Mittleman, a lawyer with ChurchWyble/Grewal Law, an Okemos firm that represents 111 Nassar victims. The settlement did not include confidentiality or nondisclosure agreements. But for some survivors, like Rachel Denhollander, the first woman to go public with her story, there is a long way to go. She had both praise and criticism for the university with the announcement of the settlement.

MSU said the university's Board of Trustees approved the settlement during a conference call Tuesday night. The agreement settles claims against the university and people associated with the university.

Nassar sexually assaulted women and girls while serving as a sports doctor at Michigan State. But the university cleared him repeatedly and in 2014, said those alleging sexual assault had mistaken proper medical treatment for sexual assault.
