Trump discloses payment to Cohen in financial form

US President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen leaves the US Courthouse in New York

President Donald Trump reported having paid his personal attorney Michael Cohen more than $100,000 as a reimbursement for a payment made to a third party, documents released on Wednesday confirmed.

The ethics office seemed to disagree, annotating the document: "OGE has concluded that the information related to the payment made by Mr. Cohen is required to be reported and that the information provided meets the disclosure requirement for a reportable liability". The money was meant to keep her from discussing an alleged extramarital affair with Trump prior to the 2016 election.

Walter Shaub, the former Director of the Office of Government Ethics, went even further than Miller.

Trump's latest form said the reimbursement was being reported "in the interest of transparency", though it did not have to be disclosed as a reportable liability.

The payment made by Cohen was between $100,001 and $250,000 and there was no interest incurred, the report said.

Cohen has previously said he paid adult film actress Stormy Daniels $130,000 as part of a settlement and non-disclosure agreement reached just before the election in 2016.

On May 2, Rudy Giuliani, the former NY mayor who joined Trump's personal legal team in April, said that Trump had reimbursed Cohen for the payment. Giuliani indicated in an interview earlier this month that Trump reimbursed Cohen in installments. "Leaves DOJ no choice but to open at least a preliminary investigation into Trump for false statements (if he wasn't already a subject in the Cohen inquiry, which he might be)".

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington has contended that Trump should have reported the reimbursement previous year.

The form will cover all of 2017 and some of 2018.
