Trump CIA nominee: United States should not have undertaken harsh interrogations

Gina Haspel, CIA pick, easily clears intel committee

The favorable suggestion comes after Haspel advised Congress, in a letter despatched to Warner on Monday, that she now feels the spy company shouldn't have employed the tough interrogations program used on al Qaeda detainees that included waterboarding. Mark Warner of Virginia and Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

He said that Haspel's nomination has "strong support" even among intelligence community leaders who served under former President Barack Obama. McCain said her role "in overseeing the use of torture by Americans is disturbing".

It was Haspel's reticence to say that the CIA's interrogation program was, in retrospect, morally wrong that sparked the Senate's authorities on torture - namely, Sens.

Bolstering the comments she made during her hearing, Haspel wrote, "I do not support use of enhanced interrogation techniques for any objective".

With a positive committee vote, the full Senate could vote on Haspel's confirmation as early as Thursday, according to Senate aides, although that would require cooperation from senators to waive the chamber's procedural hurdles for a quick vote. But some Democrats announced their support of Haspel on Tuesday, which indicated she would garner the Senate's approval and be named Central Intelligence Agency director.

Haspel said she would "refuse to undertake any proposed activity that is contrary to my moral and ethical values". But she also claimed to have a close relationship with the president, which discomfited those already uneasy about her record.

'Most importantly, ' he added, 'I believe she is someone who can and will stand up to the President if ordered to do something illegal or immoral - like a return to torture'. Haspel told the committee that she would not resurrect the agency's controversial rendition, detainee, and interrogation program if she became CIA director, but went no further. "Ms. Haspel wants to elucidate the character and extent of her involvement within the CIA's interrogation program in the course of the affirmation course of".

Most likely now that she has the votes to be confirmed, or in the off chance to cast the deciding vote against her, U.S. Senator Doug Jones of Alabama issued a statement late Tuesday afternoon announcing his decision to vote against Haspel.

The interrogation program became one of the darkest chapters of the CIA's history and tainted America's image worldwide after the September 11 attacks.

Trump has said the country should consider using the so-called enhanced interrogation techniques. The Senate adopted that rule change in 2015 as part of the annual defense authorization bill by a vote of 78 to 21.

"Ms. Haspel is cynically trying to offer mere words in an attempt to win votes to support her confirmation", said Gen. Charles Krulak, former commandant of the Marine Corps. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who endured years of it as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, and Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who authored the Senate's definitive report on the CIA's practices - to declare Haspel unconfirmable.

Haspel's opponents, however, continue to weigh into the debate.

"The definition of moral courage is doing the right thing at the right time for the right reasons when no one's looking".

"The United States must be an example to the rest of the world, and I support that", she said in her letter.

Daphne Eviatar with Amnesty International on Tuesday called Haspel's nomination an "affront to human rights".
