Sherrod Brown Joins Senate Effort To Revive Net Neutrality

Republicans described the effort to reinstate net neutrality rules as ‘‘political theater’’ because the GOP-controlled House is not expected to take up the issue and the Senate’s margin could not overcome a presidential veto

"But instead of moving forward with that approach with Republicans to draft such legislation, the Democratic leadership chose to try to score political points by pushing a resolution to undo the FCC's decision, even though undoing this decision will do nothing to provide a permanent solution on net neutrality", said Sen.

The Congressional Review Act resolution to restore net neutrality rules, which were reversed by the FCC previous year, will be brought to the Senate floor on Wednesday.

Announcing that Democrats would force a vote on the repeal of net neutrality, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY said in a statement, "Soon the American people will know which side their member of Congress is on: fighting for big corporations and ISPs or defending small business owners, entrepreneurs, middle-class families, and everyday consumers". A final vote by the Senate was expected later on Wednesday. Susan Collins of ME, is expected to pass in the Senate but its future in the GOP-led House is doubtful and President Donald Trump is unlikely to back it.

Though the vote on the measure has been expected for months, its outcome is uncertain. Fifty senators have declared their support for it - one shy of the majority needed to pass it.

Demonstrators rally outside the Federal Communication Commission building to protest against the end of net neutrality rules on December 14, 2017 in Washington, DC. The Open Internet Order prohibited internet service providers from blocking, slowing down, or discriminating against content online. "A vote against this resolution will be a vote to protect large corporations and special interests, leaving the American public to pay the price", explains Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer in a statement on Monday.

The company further mentions 38 more apps which divert the traffic to various dodgy websites instead of functioning as advertised. With more than ten million Australians using Android phones , they could be paying $580 million in unnecessary fees every year.

"Will we stand with the American public, who understand why net neutrality is vital, or will we side with those who wish to control how we use the internet?" Sen. It also hands off to the Federal Trade Commission the job of ensuring providers abide by the terms they've disclosed and watching out for anticompetitive behavior. And they've been pushing measures in the states that would offer net-neutrality protections within their borders.

The resolution is likely to be vetoed if it reaches the president's desk.

That the FCC overturned its net-neutrality rules was no surprise.

Markey noted that his resolution has garnered support from all 47 chamber Democrats, independent U.S. Sens. And Trump is unlikely to sign a resolution that would effectively rebuke his chosen FCC chairman. Susan Collins (R-Maine) is the only Republican who has pledged to support net neutrality. However, he did so despite widespread support for the rules; a survey taken around the time of the FCC's December vote showed that an overwhelming majority of Americans supported keeping them in place, including most Republican voters.
