Settlement reached in Giants, Manning fraud case

Brian C. Brook attorney for the plaintiff addresses the court at the start of the Eli Manning NY Giants fraud trial which is being heard in Bergen County Superior Court on Monday

As Jay Busbee of Yahoo Sports explained, attorneys for the plaintiff, Eric Inselberg, filed an email from Manning asking Giants equipment manager Joseph Skiba for "2 helmets that can pass as game used".

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning speaks to reporters during NFL football training camp, Wednesday, April 25, 2018, in East Rutherford, N.J.

Jury selection was to have begun this week, but a death in the family of one of the attorneys had pushed that back to next Monday.

A lawsuit accusing former Ole Miss and current New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning of selling fraudulent "game-worn" memorabilia to collectors has reportedly been settled, according to Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk.

An attorney for the plaintiffs confirmed the settlement Monday night.

The lawsuit included an accusation that two helmets purchased by the plaintiffs, including one purportedly worn by Manning in the 2008 Super Bowl which wound up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, were not game-worn, as claimed by Giants equipment managers.

"All parties are grateful to have the matter, which began in 2014, concluded and are now focused on football, the fans and the future", the statement added.

Eden Hazard exit fears prompting Chelsea to take drastic action
The Chelsea boss holding his hands up: 'From the start, Newcastle outplayed us in every way...they deserved to win'. In his first season Chelsea were not playing Champions League football and a small talented squad would suffice.

Still, the veteran quarterback has denied wrongdoing in this case while claiming Inselberg had trafficked in fake memorabilia.

Manning and the Giants had denied the allegations and characterized the suit as "inflammatory and baseless" in court filings.

"I will say I have never done what I have been accused of doing", Manning said previous year.

Jonathan Hoff, an attorney for Manning with the firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, declined to comment on Brook's statement and would not say whether the parties were discussing a settlement. Skiba replied, "BS ones, you are correct".

Manning's attorneys claimed the emails had been marked confidential and should never have been released, and that Manning was merely honoring a contract with Steiner Sports to provide two each of game-used helmets and jerseys.

Three memorabilia collectors filed a civil fraud and racketeering suit in January 2014 against the Giants, Manning, equipment manager Joe Skiba, Steiner Sports and team co-owner and CEO John Mara, claiming that the two-time Super Bowl MVP instructed Skiba to get equipment so it could be sold off as authentic.

Now the trial, which was expected to take approximately four weeks, will be averted altogether, keeping Manning from possibly having to take the stand to testify about his alleged role in a scheme to falsely depict helmets and other pieces of Giants equipment as game-worn.
