Keyless cars have a risky downside that has killed dozens of people

A lovely balanced architectural composition

While convenient, keyless cars can sometimes have a deadly effect, according to a report from the New York Times.

It seems like a common convenience in a digital age: a vehicle that can be powered on and off with the push of a button, rather than the mechanical turning of a key.

The problem with keyless cars causing the deaths of over 28 people since 2006 has to do with users failing to turn of the ignition on the cars. The result: carbon monoxide doing great harm in both garages and homes. But weaned from the habit of turning and removing a key to shut off the motor, drivers - particularly older ones - can be lulled by newer, quieter engines into mistakenly thinking that it has stopped running.

A new report from the New York Times suggests that keyless cars are responsible for causing the deaths of dozens of people since 2006. In addition to the more than 28 people who have died due to the ignition issues, more than 45 have been injured. Dozens others have gotten sick, some left with brain damage.

In 2011, the National Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) proposed regulation for warning systems in keyless vehicles.

While automakers have installed warning systems into their keyless-ignition vehicles voluntarily, there is no universal standard among the systems.

Some vehicle manufacturers are incorporating measures like alarms to warn drivers or have the auto turn off automatically if it's standing idle for a while, but not all cars have these features.

The issue first came to the attention of the Society of Automotive Engineers.
