Kami Rita Sherpa scales Mount Everest for record 22nd time

Kami Rita, a veteran Sherpa guide, also claimed a new record for Mount Everest summits by making it to the peak for the 22nd time with a group of climbers.

The 48-year-old Kami Rita was among the three men who had jointly held the previous record of 21 successful ascents of the 8,848m peak.

Kami Rita Sherpa made the maiden ascent of Qomolangma in 1994 when he was 24 years old.

A 44-year-old woman, Lhakpa Sherpa, who lives in Connecticut, United States, climbed for the ninth time on Wednesday, breaking her own record of the most summits by a woman, her Nepali hiking company said.

According to Outside Magazine, Sherpa, 45, reached the summit of Everest at 5:40 a.m. on May 16 with the Seven Summits Club from the Chinese side.

He has already climbed most of the peaks above 8,000 meters including K2 and Annapurna, among others.

A Sherpa guide has been missing on Everest's southern side in Nepal since Monday, said Mingma of Seven Summits.

Apart from Kami, dozens climbed the mountain Wednesday, Shrestha said from the Base Camp. Phurba Tashi, 47, retired from high-altitude climbing in 2013 but still works at Everest's base camp, helping organise expeditions. She now lives in the U.S. and works at a departmental store.

The route to the summit was opened up by a team of Sherpa guides earlier this week.

The mountain is climbed taking advantage of narrow weather windows between mid- to late May, after weeks of acclimatization at lower altitudes.

She first climbed Everest from South Col in 2000 and since has climbed from the North Col eight times. He lost his legs after a failed Everest attempt in 1975.

While many Everest climbers train for months for the arduous journey, Sherpa credits the physical demands of her job and the fact that she was raised up above 13,000 feet for her ability to climb "off the couch".
