Barletta wins Republican Senate primary in Pennsylvania. Senate

U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta will challenge U.S. Senator Bob Casey in the fall.

A Republican who was an early backer of President Donald Trump looked to secure his party's nomination for the Senate on Tuesday in Pennsylvania, a state Democrats consider crucial for a political comeback.

Barletta's campaign said Saturday it sent a recorded telephone call of Trump criticizing Casey and telling hundreds of thousands of registered Republicans why he supports Barletta "fully, strongly, and proudly", CNBC reported.

But, the Associated Press also pointed out, Casey is among 10 Democratic senators seeking re-election this year in states won by Trump, making him a prime target for Republicans. These results are unlikely to calm their nerves.

Barletta, a former mayor of Hazleton, was heavily favored to win the race, having been endorsed by President Trump and the state's GOP.

In the months leading up to Tuesday's primary contest, Barletta clearly was fighting harder against Casey than against Christiana. Bob Casey this fall, CNBC reported.

Democrats' path to a possible House majority starts with several seats in the Philadelphia suburbs, and the party will pick its candidates there in Tuesday's primary.

This is the first time voters will experience the new congressional districts that were redrawn in February.

Trump states in the recording that Sen. Guy Reschenthaler in the GOP primary for the deep-red 14th District in western Pennsylvania.

Barletta accused Casey of moving too "far left", and not being in line with the will of Pennsylvanians who support Trump's agenda.

And so, the candidates from Luzerne and Lackawanna counties make President Donald Trump the focal point of the senate race that begins tonight.

This race could help determine whether republicans maintain control of the chamber.

Perhaps the highest-stakes battle is the Democratic primary for the Lehigh Valley House seat being vacated by retiring Republican Rep. Charlie Dent.

Casey was first elected to the Senate in 2006. He has won five statewide elections, served as state treasurer and auditor general, and won his 2012 Senate election by more than 9 percentage points.

To the west, Democrats are watching a House primary in Nebraska, where former Rep. Brad Ashford - a conservative "Blue Dog" who lost to Republican Rep. Don Bacon in 2016 - must hold off progressive Kara Eastman before he gets a rematch with Bacon.
