WhatsApp's latest update brings more order and control to group chats

WhatsApp update brings Slack-style group messaging features and new admin controls

WhatsApp is rolling out a series of helpful features to boost the Group Chat experience.

In a statement, WhatsApp said "Groups have been an important part of the WhatsApp experience, whether it's family members connecting across the globe or childhood friends staying in touch over the years". One new feature allows for a description of the group to be posted.

The new WhatsApp Groups feature are available for Android and iPhone users starting Tuesday.

The update comes after WhatsApp promised a new group video calling feature at the Facebook F8 conference last month.

Starting today for both iOS and Android users, WhatsApp group chat changes will be rolled out that allow users to include a description to detail the objective, guidelines, or topics for the group. The description pops up at the top whenever someone new joins in.

WhatsApp gave examples of how come together in groups on WhatsApp like new parents looking for support, students organising study sessions, and city leaders coordinating relief efforts after natural disasters.

WhatsApp admins have been given a new control under group settings that allows them to do a bunch of things that includes restricting who can change the groups's icon, description or subject.

Have you received the new WhatsApp update yet?

WhatsApp also says that admins can now remove admin permissions of other group participants, and group creators can no longer be removed from the group they started.

WhatsApp already has some nifty features which lets you remain in a group but at the same time avoid all the commotion it can become.

Just like any feature, there is room to grow and that is what WhatsApp is doing to groups. Also called "group catch up", the feature lets users find those messages in which they have been mentioned, or those messages that reply to them. "Today, we're sharing improvements that we've made to groups". WhatsApp says the tool is created to help users quickly get up to speed inside a group after being away from the chat.

Find anyone in a group by searching for participants on the group info page.
