Nanny gets life in prison without parole for killing 2 children

A NY nanny convicted of fatally stabbing two young children in her care was sentenced on Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for a crime that has been described as every parent's nightmare.

Last month, a jury rejected her lawyers' arguments that she was mentally ill and could not be held responsible for the deaths of the siblings and convicted her of murder.

The motive, prosecutors said, was Ortega's overwhelming financial problems after bringing her 17-year-old son from the Dominican Republic and her resentment toward Marina Krim, married to then-CNBC executive Kevin Krim, for being the mother "she could never be".

The youngsters's mom discovered them in a toilet.

The case shocked working parents and went on to inspire a best-selling French novel that explored the relationship between a working mother and the woman she hires to look after her young children.

A jury in April found her guilty of murdering both children, which is punishable by a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Ortega had been working for the Krim family for almost two years when she took the children to the back bathroom of their apartment and killed them.

The victims' parents, Marina Krim and Kevin Krim, each read their own victim impact statements in court, recounting memories of the children who were murdered in their own home. Ortega was to have dropped off Lucia at her dance class, and Krim was to pick her up.

Ortega was also struggling to pay tuition fees for her 17-year-old son, whom she had brought to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic and enrolled in a private school. "We believe that the 10 Principles of Creativity can help children across this city and this country build the social-emotional skills and resilience to thrive no matter what the world throws at them". Each had been stabbed multiple times with a kitchen knife, police said. "I ask for a great deal of forgiveness", she said in a shaky voice.

At Ortega's trial, Kevin Krim, who had been on a business trip and received news of the children's deaths when his plane landed, spoke of walking down a long hallway at the hospital where he saw their bodies.

At trial, the DA's team said the nanny knew what she was doing.
