14 killed in Afghanistan clashes

Taliban insurgents launched attacks from multiple directions on the capital of Farah province in western Afghanistan near the border with Iran early Tuesday, killing and wounding "dozens" of security forces, a local official said. Local residents fear the whole province may fall to the insurgents.

But the defence ministry said the army had repulsed the attack, and "the security forces are now chasing the enemy".

One of the attacks was claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group and the other by the Taliban.

Taliban fighters are said to be just a few kilometres from the city centre with fierce fighting between the militants and government troops continuing.

Khogyani said the firefight lasted seven hours as the security forces strived to rescue employees of the department.

Taliban militants, who ruled the country before being ousted in late 2001, have intensified armed attacks against security forces since April 25 during their annual rebel offensive. People in #Farah stand by their security forces and operation continues.

Afghanistan has always been torn in political, social and security turmoil, primarily due to the hostilities between government troops and the Taliban radical movement.

At least five militants have been killed and three others have been wounded during another clash that took place in Chahar Bolak district of northern Balkh province.

Reuters quoted residents as saying Taliban forces had set up illegal checkpoints in parts of the city and were stopping people from leaving.

Farah shares borders with restive Helmand province, and according to local media, the militants arrived from Helmand where an intensive security operation is ongoing.

Several security personnel, including provincial Deputy Police Chief Abdul Razaq, were injured during the fighting.
