Erdogan: Turkey attaches special importance to cooperation with Great Britain

Turkish President Erdoğan meets Iranian President Rouhani

"With its latest step America has chosen to be a part of the problem, not a solution, and lost its mediator role in the Middle East peace process", Erdogan told the Chatham House global affairs think tank. Meetings with Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Theresa May are planned within the framework of the visit.

Mr Erdogan has been widely criticised for abandoning the secular principles of the state in Turkey. Addressing British businesspeople, Erdoğan also noted that Turkey offers access to expansive markets of around 1.5 billion people in just a 3 to 4-hour flight, and is thereby offers an important opportunity to expand into new markets.

Pro-Erdogan demonstrators were on the streets as well today facing off against critics of the Turkish government.

However, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable condemned the visit as he accused the Turkish leader of having an "unacceptable disregard for liberal, democratic values".

The US has lost its role as mediator in the Middle East by moving its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in London on Monday.

Erdogan said he wanted to increase trade and security ties between the two countries as Britain prepares to leave the European Union in March 2019, the so-called Brexit process. During his speech, the president highlighted that Turkey does not discriminate between Turkish or British companies, adding that 3,000 companies with United Kingdom capital operate in Turkey.

Mrs May and the Turkish president are set to discuss global issues such as the situation in Cyprus where the two nations act as guarantors.

"We are ready to cooperate more with the U.K.post-Brexit in every field", Erdogan said.

'We have always been clear that we want Turkey to uphold its worldwide obligations including respect for freedom of expression and political freedoms.

"The cooperation we have with the U.K.is well beyond any mechanism that we established with other partners".
