Former Texas dentist released from prison 15 years after killing husband

Clara Harris

Clara Harris, a former Friendswood dentist and mother of twins, walked out of the Crain Unit in Gatesville Friday morning after serving 15 years of a 20-year prison sentence for killing her husband, David Harris.

When told that her husband could be found with his former receptionist, Gail Bridges, at the Nassau Bay Hilton, Harris flew into a jealous rage.

The private investigator Clara Harris hired to follow her husband videotaped the incident, which showed her striking him repeatedly with her Mercedes-Benz in the parking lot of a Houston hotel - the same one the couple had been married in on Valentine's Day 1992. Harris and husband David Harris were both dentists living in a South Houston suburb with their 3-year old twin sons, according to Texas Monthly.

The investigator was videotaping at the hotel when Harris confronted her husband and his mistress, running her husband over with her auto. Clara Harris went back to her auto, gunned the engine, and ran it into Bridges' vehicle, which tossed David Harris across the parking lot.

The fight moved outside, where Harris drove the auto over him three times.

She was also ordered to wear an electronic monitoring device on her ankle and undergo drug and alcohol testing.

Harris was sentenced to 20 years for manslaughter in the death of David Harris, 44, an orthodontist.

"I'm glad she's getting out", he said. Then Harris stopped her vehicle and cradled her dead husband in her arms, saying "David, I'm so sorry".

"Clara served more time than most similarly situated people", her attorney and family friend Emily DeToto said in the Chronicle. "I look forward to catching up with her soon".

Will Clara be shunned or supported by the community who convicted her?
