Alfie Evans taken off life support over parents' objections

Lawyers for Alfie Evans' parents said an air ambulance was "waiting outside Alder Hey Hospital" ready to take the boy to Italy, where he has been offered treatment.

Alfie's father, Tom Evans, addressed the media outside Alder Hey Children's Hospital earlier today.

While hospitalized, Alfie struggled to breathe due to a myoclonic jerking spasm, and was placed on life support.

Alfie's father, Tom Evans, said Tuesday that Alfie survived for six hours with no assistance, and that doctors had subsequently resumed providing oxygen and hydration.

"The hospital claims that Alfie is "insensate" and unaware of any stimulus or irritation, which is proven wrong in hundreds of videos, against the odds of a heavy cocktail of anti-seizure drugs with sedative effect".

The Strasbourg-based court said it received an application from the parents of 23-month-old Alfie Evans on Friday to potentially delay Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool from removing him from life support.

Alfie's parents campaigned unsuccessfully to prevent Alder Hey Children's Hospital stopping the youngster's life support, and protesters backing the family have been demonstrating outside the hospital.

The 23-month-old boy who is terminally ill reportedly left doctors "gobsmacked" by continuing to breathe unassisted on Monday night.

Why is it the court's business if the parents seek treatment elsewhere, especially from qualified medical facilities like Bambino Gesu Pediatric Hospital? They then appealed fighting in the Court of Appeal which upheld the decision. He has not been definitively diagnosed, but his doctors think he suffers from a rare and incurable degenerative neurological condition.

Alfie's parents have recorded their son yawning, stretching and opening his eyes as they believe it is evidence that doctors shouldn't give up on him yet. But just who is Alfie and what's happened to him?

Specialists at Alder Hey said life-support treatment should stop and Mr Justice Hayden said he accepted medical evidence which showed that further treatment was futile. Supreme Court justices and European Court of Human Rights judges refused to intervene.

However, his parents and their supporters raised millions of pounds and fought for him to be flown to America for an experimental treatment.

He has previously been granted Italian citizenship by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy.

During another three-hour hearing on Tuesday at the Family Division of the High Court sitting in Manchester, Paul Diamond, from the Christian Legal Centre representing the parents, suggested the alleged change in the position meant the court should reconsider its decision on allowing Alfie to travel overseas.

During the hearing, Justice Hayden appeared to blame the parents for not being able to take Alfie home.

The boy's parents were not in court Tuesday; Williams said they wanted to be at the hospital, at their son's side.

"Alfie continues to fight for his life in an extraordinary way, as do his parents and our lawyers", said Andrea Williams, who leads Christian Concern, the parent organization of the Christian Legal Centre.

Charlie's parents abandoned their legal fight when even Professor Hirano, the U.S. doctor who offered an experimental treatment, flew to the United Kingdom under court orders and determined Charlie's condition was irreversible. "I'm not suggesting this, I don't want it to be taken as an indication from me".

As appeal efforts were unsuccessful, life support was removed on Monday night, but Alfie remains alive, defying expectations.
