Iran pledges to destroy Israel within 25 years as tensions rise

"I do not believe that we are headed towards regional war", Zarif answered, "but I do believe that unfortunately, Israel has continued its violations of global law, hoping to be able to do it with impunity because of the U.S. support and trying to find smokescreens to hide behind".

Iran's military head said Saturday that forces are preparing to "annihilate" Israel's Zionist regime within 25 years after recent threats between the foes.

Zarif's comments however, follow a barrage of threats issued by Iranian officials in recent weeks warning of Israel's destruction.

"And I do not believe that the smokescreens work anymore", he said.

Following a threat from an Iranian general to destroy Israel, the IDF targeted a position of the Syrian army, a client of Iran, after spillover fire landed in Israel, The Times of Israel reported Monday.

Zarif "is a foreign minister of a country that sent armed drones into Israel and fired missiles at Saudi Arabia", Netanyahu said.

The foreign minister did say Iran opposes the use of chemical weapons and that it has encouraged Assad to "cooperate with an onsite impartial investigation".

According to a Israeli security source, Israel believes that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has established bases in Syria and is planning to launch an attack. Israel has not commented.

Israel's Army Radio reported that, given tensions with Iran over Syria, the Israeli air force canceled plans to send F-15 fighter jets to take part in the USA -hosted exercise Red Flag, which begins on April 30. Israeli sources claimed the attack was aimed at Iranian fighters in the Arab country, while Tehran denied the claims that it had a military presence in the country.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei described the strike in Syria as "Israel's crime" and said it would "not remain without response" a day after it occurred.

"When the arrogant powers create a sanctuary for the Zionist regime to continue survival, we shouldn't allow one day to be added to the ominous and illegitimate life of this regime", Mousavi said in a Fars News Agency report.

"The army will move hand in hand with the IRGC so that the arrogant system will collapse and the Zionist regime will be annihilated", General Mousavi said, referring to the Revolutionary Guards.

Israel, said Salami, was living "in the dragon's mouth". "And you'll have nowhere to run, except to fall into the sea".

However, New York Times' columnist Thomas Friedman wrote that a senior Israeli military official admitted to him that Israel attacked the Syrian base known as T4, in a separate attack.
