8.28 million videos removed by YouTube in final quarter of 2017

In December Google said it was hiring 10,000 people in 2018 to address policy violations across its platforms

Google-owned YouTube provides the needed content information for Internet users but it has also faced severe criticism about its inaction in dealing with inappropriate content like unnecessary spam and adult videos.

YouTube has disclosed that it has removed 8.3m videos from its platform in between October to December 2017.

What's really intriguing about the report though is the fact that it clearly states that YouTube makes use of machine learning to flag and remove videos. 76% of the 6.7 million videos were removed by YouTube before they received even one view.

YouTube, however, claims that its anti-abuse machine learning algorithm, which it relies on to monitor and handle potential violations at scale, is "paying off across high-risk, low-volume areas (like violent extremism) and in high-volume areas (like spam)". During this period, Youtube removed 8.2 million flagged videos.

"Now more than half of the videos we remove for violent extremism have fewer than 10 views".

The Witcher TV series' possible release date, episodes, and location revealed
Is there anything in particular that you'd like to see happen in the show? Said saga notably contains eight novels. So far, only the pilot episode is written, the other seven episodes existing only in Hissrich's head.

The majority of the videos removed due to user flagging were from YouTube's Individual Trusted Flagger programme, with the platform taking down 1.1 million videos reported by Trusted Flaggers. The issue came to the forefront a year ago after a report by The Times, but many content creators say YouTube's updated policies have made it very hard to monetize on the platform, even though their videos don't violate its rules. YouTube realized its mistake after being asked about the video by The Guardian.

During that same period, 9.3 million videos were flagged by people, with almost 95% coming from YouTube users and the rest from its Trusted Flagger program and government agencies or NGOs.

YouTube also stated that they do receive human flagged videos in addition to the algorithm marked videos. Earlier this year, YouTube announced the creation of an "Intelligence Desk", adding 10,000 new content moderators.

"Deploying machine learning actually means more people reviewing content, not fewer".
