Plane passenger dilemma: Protect child or try to save victim

The NTSB said a fan blade had broken off, apparently because of metal fatigue. Sumwalt says that the woman who was wearing a seatbelt and sitting next to the window died.

Despite their efforts, Riordan was pronounced dead at a Philadelphia hospital after the plane made an emergency landing.

Jennifer Riordan was returning home to Albuquerque from a business trip Tuesday when shrapnel from the blown engine shattered the window next to her seat.

"They had a great marriage", Gerard said. The plane landed safely.

Photos of the plane on the tarmac showed a missing window and a chunk gone from the left engine, including part of its cover.

Besides Riordan, seven of the 144 passengers were injured.

The plane from NY to Dallas landed in Philadelphia.

Her husband is a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel, who's a long time member of OU's athletic department.

The twin-engine Boeing 737 that left NY with 149 people board was hit by shrapnel that smashed a window, killing a passenger and injuring seven others.

"I just knew at that moment someone needed him much more than we did", wife Stephanie Needum said.

Riordan had to be pulled back in by a team of passengers-including Andrew Needum, a firefighter from Texas-and was given CPR by retired nurse Peggy Phillips for nearly 20 minutes until the plane's pilot was able to make an emergency landing in Philadelphia.

Needum was one of the passengers who were finally able to pull Riordan back into the plane. He rushed over and tried to pull her back in.

FBI investigators photographed the wide panel found in Bernville, near where the engine is believed to have failed, according to a Reading Eagle reporter.

Australia's Qantas Airways Ltd, a large 737 operator, said its engines were of a slightly different model than those targeted for inspection.

The pilots of the twin-engine Boeing 737 bound from NY to Dallas with 149 people aboard made an abrupt turn toward Philadelphia and began a rapid descent after the engine blew.

Jennifer Riordan, a 43-year-old Wells Fargo bank executive and mother of two from Albuquerque, New Mexico, didn't survive. She later died from her injuries. "Her beauty and love is evident through her children", and the statement asked that in her memory people keep in mind to "always be kind, loving, caring and sharing". She says shortly after takeoff there was a loud noise and the plane started shaking like it was "coming apart".

She heard a lot of commotion a few rows behind her, noise and a whoosh of air and calls for someone who knew CPR.

An individual familiar with the investigation said it is likely Ms Riordan's neck broke from the force of the airplane's speed when her head was pulled outside.

A year ago, however, both CFM and the FAA asked companies to do ultrasonic scans on the engines' fan blades.

In a second media briefing, the NTSB stated that blade #13 of 24 on the left hand CFM56 engine had separated at the hub, and that there was evidence of metal fatigue.

As a precaution, Southwest said it will inspect similar engines in its fleet over the next 30 days.
