Afghanistan: More than 30 deaths in attack in Kabul

Earlier, a auto packed with explosives blew up outside a sports stadium in Afghanistan's restive south, killing at least 13 people and wounding dozens more, officials said, capping a bloody week in the war-torn country.

People gather outside a voter registration centre which was attacked by a suicide bomber in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Sunday, April 22, 2018.

A health ministry spokesman has confirmed to reporters in Kabul that the blast killed at least six people and wounded 23 others.

An official from the ministry of public health said ambulances returning from the site had brought at least four dead and 15 wounded into city hospitals but the final toll was not known.

A witness to the attack named Akbar told Tolo TV: "Now we know the government can not provide us security: we have to get armed and protect ourselves".

The Taliban, who usually claim their attacks, denied involvement in Sunday's bombing.

Macke's lawyer, who did not comment following the sentencing, said his client made a mistake and should be allowed to rectify it. The Alford plea is not an admittance of guilty but acknowledges that prosecutors likely have enough evidence for a conviction.

Voter registration began this month but there have already been a number of attacks apparently aimed at disrupting the preparations.

Officials have been pushing people to register amid fears a low turnout will undermine the credibility of the polls.

Voter registration centres have been set up across Afghanistan ahead of long-delayed parliamentary and district council elections due to be held in October and there have been serious concerns that militants might attack them.

The last major attack in Kabul was on March 21 when an Islamic State suicide bomber blew himself up in a crowd celebrating the Persian New Year holiday.

He said around a dozen insurgents were also killed in the battle, which is still under way.

No one immediately claimed responsibility.
