Starbucks will temporarily close 8000 U.S. stores for racial-bias training

Starbucks Coffee Emerges As Largest Food Chain in Manhattan

Meanwhile, Starbucks will close 8,000 of the company's US -based locations to train 175,000 employees and address implicit bias, promote inclusion and help prevent discrimination.

The company said in the Tuesday announcement that it will also provide training materials for non-company workers at the roughly 6,000 licensed Starbucks cafes that will remain open in locations such as grocery stores and airports. In 2016, USA system-wide sales notched nearly $15 billion. He added that it is his responsibility to make sure that every Starbucks customer feels "safe and welcome". Sixty percent of that figure accounts for about $24 million.

Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson is in Philadelphia and has said he would like to meet with the men and city officials. Starbucks said its US company-owned stores and corporate offices will be closed on the afternoon of May 29 for the training, which will eventually be incorporated into the instruction process for all newly hired employees.

The two men, whose identities have not been released, were arrested last Thursday after a Starbucks manager called 911.

Mr Johnson said the video was "hard to watch" and that the actions taken were "wrong" and "reprehensible".

The video emerged as Starbucks was embrollied in a PR nightmare after two black men were arrested for refusing to leave a store in Philadelphia. A lawyer for the men did not immediately return messages for comment.

Brandon Ward filmed himself in one of the coffee chain's outlets in Torrance, Los Angeles, after he claimed to have been denied the bathroom code. But Ward says apologies are useless unless changes are made and that Starbucks needs to treat all their customers the same way.

Several patrons defended the men in the video and scores more led protests against the coffee shop in Philadelphia over the weekend.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said during a Facebook live session that he felt his officers did nothing wrong in arresting the men, even though they were not charged and released after eight hours.

In policing, implicit bias causes some groups to receive undeserved suspicion while other groups are presumed innocent, according to the National Initiative for Building Community Trust and Justice, a project that was funded by the Department of Justice in 2014.

The group then took over the Starbucks, vowing to stay without making one purchase.
