Donald Trump reports 'high level' talks with North Korea

President Donald Trump listens as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe speaks during their meeting at Trump's private Mar-a Lago club Tuesday

After a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday morning (AEST) at his Florida estate to discuss trade and North Korea tensions, Mr Trump revealed the U.S. is in conversation with Pyongyang, but would not give any additional details.

The two leaders are scheduled to have rounds of talks at Trump's retreat in Florida on Tuesday and Wednesday. USA officials said they expected Abe to lobby for an exemption during talks on Wednesday.

"I am in Florida and looking forward to my meeting with Prime Minister Abe of Japan".

Speaking today, the president said he and Shinzo Abe discussed North Korea, military and trade during their two-day summit.

Privately, however, White House advisers are anxious that five days in Florida will give Trump too much time to brood over Mueller, Russia, and the swirl of scandals now involving Cohen. "But we will see what happens". "It's going on right now", Trump said. "It'll be taking place probably in early June or a little before that". And they are discussing an end to the war.

Most other key US allies, including Australia, Canada, the European Union, and Mexico have been granted exemptions to the protectionist measures, which went into effect last month. The U.S. had a trade deficit with Japan past year of $56 billion. Trump will play host to Japan's Shinzo Abe at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday amid growing strain between the two countries over the president's planned meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un and his push for new tariffs.

Meanwhile, Trump says five locations are under consideration for the historic U.S.

Abe will be seeking reassurance from Trump that security threats to Japan won't be overlooked in the U.S. Trump tweeted that he would only rejoin TPP if he could do so on much better terms - which the other countries are unlikely to grant.

Larry Kudlow, the director of the National Economic Council, says issuing Japan the waiver to the Trump-ordered sanctions or opening negotiations on a new trade agreement with Japan are "all on the table".

Despite Trump's unpredictability, Abe has worked hard to cultivate the American president. Their first encounter came just over a week after the 2016 election, when Abe made a pilgrimage to Trump Tower to confer with the new president-elect. Abe's father, who also served as prime minister, once golfed with President Eisenhower.

Although aides initially said there would be no golf during this visit, Trump said he and Abe will "sneak out" for a round on Wednesday.
