Russia: No Proof of Chemical Attack in Syria, 'It Was Staged'

The allies could not wait "to alleviate further humanitarian suffering caused by chemical weapons attacks", according to excerpts of her speech.

Russian officials have claimed that the Douma attack was staged to distract the public from a supposed lack of clarity about who poisoned ex-spy Sergei Skripal in Salibsury in March. Britain believes "that is wholly within the principles and practices of the United Nations", she said. She noted in the meeting that Russian Federation "has stopped at nothing to defend the Syrian regime's multiple uses of chemical weapons". The US and its allies, Nebenzia alleged, are setting the stage to "unleash a military scenario against Syria". The statement said none of the patients had any symptoms of chemical poisoning.

Lavrov noted that Russian and US militaries have a hotline to prevent incidents, adding that it's not clear if it would be sufficient amid mounting tensions. But Russia's embassy in London issued a statement citing British accusations of cyber threats from Moscow as "striking examples of a reckless, provocative and unfounded policy against Russia". He says Moscow has "irrefutable information that it was another fabrication".

He did not elaborate or name the state.

Biological samples from the area of the attack in Syria have tested positive for chlorine and a sarin-like nerve agent, according to a U.S. official who's familiar with the United States analysis of the test results.

As worldwide chemical weapons experts travelled to Syria to investigate a suspected gas attack by government forces which killed dozens of people, French President Emmanuel Macron spoke to Russia's Vladimir Putin and expressed concern about a worsening situation.

Syria and Russian Federation deny unleashing poison gas during their offensive on Douma this month, which ended with the recapture of the town that had been the last rebel stronghold near the capital Damascus. The Kremlin readout said that Putin warned against rushing to blame the Syrian government before conducting a "thorough and objective probe".

Later, speaking at the meeting, called by Russian Federation to discuss the prospect of an American strike on Syria, Haley said, "This meeting should not be about so-called 'unilateral threats, ' it should be about the multiple actions Russian Federation has taken to bring us to this point".

A draft resolution to condemn Friday's joint missile strikes on targets in Syria didn't come close to passing in the U.N. Security Council. He said "the Cold War is back - with a vengeance but with a difference", because safeguards that managed the risk of escalation in the past, "no longer seem to be present".

Nikki Haley, the USA ambassador to the United Nations, on Friday accused Russian Federation of lies and covering up for Assad, which she said had used chemical weapons at least 50 times in the past seven years of warfare.

A senior official in a regional alliance that backs Damascus said the Syrian government absorbed the attacks, adding that the targeted sites were evacuated days ago thanks to a warning from Russian Federation.

"We can not take such risks".

The Russian leader warned against "ill-considered and risky actions. that would have consequences beyond conjecture".

Trump said the strikes were meant to deter the use of chemical weapons like the attack on civilians in the Syrian town of Douma last week, and that the USA was prepared to continue the attacks until the Syrian regime stops using chemical weapons. Moscow alleged soon after the suspected April 7 attack that the images of the victims in Douma were fakes.

Inspectors from the Hague-based Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) travelled to Syria last week to inspect the site, but have yet to gain access to Douma, which is now under government control after the rebels withdrew.

"God forbid anything adventurous will be done in Syria following the Libyan and Iraqi experience", Mr Lavrov said. "The footage that was shown was clearly staged", he added, according to Bloomberg.

President Bashar al-Assad appears to have the upper hand against rebel factions in this seven-year war - largely due to Russian support - and all indications point to that continuing.

Britain's Ambassador Peter Wilson said in The Hague that the United Nations had cleared the inspectors to go but they had been unable to reach Douma because Syria and Russian Federation had been unable to guarantee their safety.
