GOLDOC boss Beattie apologises for closing ceremony 'stuff-up'

Winning feeling Asha Philip Dina Asher-Smith Bianca Williams and Lorraine Ugen pose with their medal

As co-hosts Johanna Griggs and Basil Zempilas explained to viewers, Channel 7 only has the rights to broadcast the footage the organisers give them, and the organisers didn't think to include the athletes in that footage.

"We can't be any more honest about it than that", he added.

From his statements, he believes that the athletes performed better in the just concluded Games in the Gold Coast than they did in Glasglow, Scotland, in 2014 considering the number of athletes featured in both competitions.

In a later television interview, Beattie said "did we stuff it up? Yes".

"We can only show the pictures that are provided by the actual host broadcasters", Griggs told Seven on Sunday. "We just need to boost the profile of the Paralympics and get that showcased around the world a bit more".

India's highest-ever haul came at home when it hosted the Games in 2010 in New Delhi, with the Indian athletes crossing the century mark.

Beattie said they "got it wrong" and that athletes should have been part of the ceremony. They did get it wrong tonight.

Performances from local musicians including Amy Shark, Guy Sebastian, Yothu Yindi, Kate Cebrano and Dami Im were included in the broadcast.

"We were driven by the welfare of athletes".

Aussie para athlete Kurt Fearnley was rarely shown on the coverage as he led his team into the ceremony.

But three justices - Neil Gorsuch, Clarence Thomas and Anthony Kennedy - have suggested a willingness to rethink those decisions. Numerous sales on Amazon's and Walmart's sites are actually done by smaller retailers using those sites as their platform.

Zempilas also took aim at some of the speeches during proceedings.

Ric Birch, who was head of ceremonies for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games, said: "I'm certainly surprised that Seven did not raise the issue of the athletes' entrance prior to the closing ceremony".

"They have actually minimised the value of any nation having a flag-bearer for closing".

As the event rolled on, spectators began streaming out of the Carrara Stadium before the ceremony finished, leaving the venue seemingly half-empty when the lights were turned back on. "You want to see them celebrating 11 days of great sport".

Sprinter Adam Gemili, who withdrew from the men's 100m final with injury, said: "We all knew it was going to be in April and had plenty of time to prepare for that".

"I was one of hundreds of dancers and we had the most exhilarating experience and I'm gutted that Australia missed out on it", she said.

Jack Morton's managing director, Helen Graney, said the company has worked alongside GOLDOC to develop "creative elements" of the Opening and Closing ceremonies.

Commonwealth Games organisers slammed for closing ceremony.

Mr Beattie later told the ABC the athletes were brought into the stadium early to avoid a scenario where they would have been kept "standing around".

Taking to Twitter, Beattie also admitted several of the speeches presented at the ceremony were needlessly long.
