Speaking outside of court to reporters, he said he is "truly sorry for what happened".

The presenter, who has been in rehab since the crash, released a statement to media outlets outside court.

His mother was in the auto with him at the time of the crash and the barrister told the district judge the incident was down to "a brief relapse unbeknownst to his passenger".

It was in heard in court that the 42-year-old had been twice the legal drink drive limit when the incident happened.

Popular British television host Ant McPartlin pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of drunk driving in connection with a three-car crash in London last month that left several people injured.

The driver of one, reading a witness statement, said that his vehicle "came round the corner like a rocket".

Wearing a black three-piece suit, white shirt and black tie, McPartlin stood in the glass dock in court to confirm his name, date of birth, address and nationality before pleading guilty to driving with 75 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

The Newcastle native stood down from all of his TV commitments to return to rehab last month, having sought treatment a year ago for an addiction to prescription pain killers.

The prosecution said that Mr McPartlin had apologised to police for his actions and admitted that he has a problem with alcohol and "emotional issues".

Ant has stepped away from his TV commitments, but will be seen in episodes of Britain's Got Talent for the next few weeks, which were recorded earlier this year.
