Trump declares 'mission accomplished' after US-led airstrikes in Syria

Syrian official news agency SANA shows smoke rising from airstrikes on a chemical weapons research center outside Damascus

"Use often!" Trump tweeted.

Two sites were targeted west of Homs and one site was targeted in Damascus.

The U.S. Department of Defense released video footage of tomahawk missiles being launched from a submarine in the Mediterranean Sea at targets in Syria as part of a "multi-national strike operation against the Syrian government".

And yet McKenzie did not rule out the possibility of future chemical weapons attacks by the Assad regime.

While the chemical weapons attack has put Syria fully on Trump's radar, experts say it's unlikely to persuade him to stay the course in Syria beyond defeating Islamic State.

While he declared success, the Pentagon said the bombing of three chemical-related facilities left enough others intact to enable the Assad government to use banned weapons against civilians if it chooses. Instead, a coordinated and prolonged campaign to militarily destroy ISIS has been the focus of the USA intervention, and Trump has vowed to withdraw the US from the conflict once this has been achieved; to the dismay of many of his military advisors.

He said, "Ten days ago, President Trump wanted to withdraw from Syria".

New US sanctions will hurt Washington and Europe more than Russian Federation
He vacillated the next day after being criticized for telegraphing war plans and insisted that no final decision had been made. The measure - proposed by Russia, a key Syria ally - only got three votes: Russia, China and Bolivia.

The nighttime Syria assault was carefully limited to minimize civilian casualties and avoid direct conflict with Syria's key ally, Russia, but confusion arose over the extent to which Washington warned Moscow in advance.

Russian Federation has military forces, including air defences, in several areas of Syria to support President Bashar Assad in his long war against anti-government rebels.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said evidence suggested that the Assad regime was behind a chemical attack in Douma on April 7, which killed at least 75, and that the global community "cannot afford" to turn a blind eye. The U.S. says it suspects that sarin gas also was used. The U.S. anti-chemical weapons policy has been inconsistent and morally incoherent, but Trump's decision to act after the recent alleged attack in Douma shows that the U.S.is aware of the rapidly changing tides in the country, and needs a justification to that its capacity to act militarily has not dwindled.

The U.S. -led operation won broad Western support. And now you know the full story, ' he said.

In his televised address from the White House on Friday, Trump said the US was prepared to keep up the economic, diplomatic and military pressure on Assad until he ends a pattern of killing his own people with internationally banned chemical weapons. What happens next, she said, is up to Assad and to his Russian and Iranian allies. The words, which likely left many people in the USA government, congress, intelligence services and military with their heads in their hands, is ambiguous in every aspect: what was the "mission", and what does it mean for it to be "accomplished"?

Trump's U.N. ambassador, Nikki Haley, told the session that the president has made it clear that if Assad uses poison gas again, "the United States is locked and loaded". In fact, Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said no additional attacks were planned.

A USA official said that while top aides such as Defense Secretary Jim Mattis had persuaded Trump to avoid the tougher action the president initially wanted, arguing that that would have risked escalation with Assad ally Russian Federation, the administration is no closer to crafting a comprehensive strategy on the war in Syria.
