Rob Gronkowski Skipping Start of Offseason Program, Could Still Retire

Rob Gronkowski's retirement threats sound suspiciously like a holdout

The Patriots begin their voluntary off-season conditioning program Monday and Rob Gronkowski will apparently not take part.

Even though he has been working out at TB12, and getting his body in shape, Gronkowski still has yet to fully commit to playing the 2018 season.

If Gronk does decide to step away from football, Dwayne Allen is now in line to be quarterback Tom Brady's No. 1 option at tight end.

The source, however, indicated there has been communication with the Patriots and Gronkowski's camp recently.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, tight end Rob Gronkowski doesn't now plan to participate in the team's voluntary offseason conditioning program set to begin Monday. The development follows months of speculation regarding Gronkowski's desire to continue his career.

The Patriots restructured Gronkowski's contract before the 2017 season to add a number of incentives, which the tight end reached during that season.

Tom Brady will also miss the opening session, as he is in Qatar on a Best Buddies mission. He is not expected to participate in the voluntary workouts either.

Speaking Friday, Bill Belichick said it would be heavily attended, but was aware of a few players who wouldn't make it.
