New US sanctions will hurt Washington and Europe more than Russian Federation

The dispute over Syria was the latest wedge between the West and Russian Federation, which has been embroiled in conflicts on multiple fronts with western governments.

Russian military and diplomatic officials warned before President Trump ordered a military strike on Syria Friday that they would counter any attack on Syrian forces in retaliation for an alleged chemical attack on April 7.

"In the past year and a half Russian Federation has fully restored Syria's air defence system and continues to further upgrade it", Rudskoi said.

Russian Ambassador Anatoly Antonov wrote on Twitter: "A pre-designed scenario is being implemented".

Russia's defence ministry said no Syrian civilians or military were killed in the attacks.

"None of the cruise missiles launched by the United States and its allies entered the zones of Russian air defenses around Tartus and Hmeymin", the ministry said in a statement.

Mr Jaffer, a former advisor to US President George W. Bush, argued the Assad regime in Syria would not exist if it was not for the support of Vladimir Putin, claiming the Russian President was also to blame for the deadly civil conflict.

"Assad's recent attack - and today's response - are the direct result of Russia's failure to keep that promise", Trump said.

But US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis struck a cautious note, telling lawmakers that the need to "stop the murder of innocent people" had to be weighed up against the risk of things "escalating out of control".

"The goal of our action tonight is to establish a strong deterrent" against the use of chemical weapons, Trump said in a statement.

Until he makes a convincing case about it, a large number of Democrats will also continue to look at him with skepticism. Washington national security lawyer Bradley Moss said Comey's claim to the moral high ground has always been weak.

British PM May summons ministers to discuss possible military action in Syria
Conservative former London mayoral candidate Zac Goldsmith, tweeted: "We need a clear response to the Syrian chemical outrage". President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that he hoped common sense would prevail and that the situation would stabilise.

"There were no attempts to broaden or expand that target set".

Also on Friday, Vassily Nebenzia, Russia's Ambassador to the UN Security Council, said that the West's sole aim in Syria was to overthrow the government and urged US, French and British leaders to refrain from military action. Moscow strongly warned against any strikes and threatened to retaliate.

"Russia had a choice - either to risk and respond militarily, which is very risky because you can lose, or what is happening now". Russian could also target U.S. allies in the region with cyber attacks, it said. He said Moscow has "irrefutable information that it was a fabrication".

The measure - proposed by Russia, a key Syria ally - only got three votes: Russia, China and Bolivia.

He vacillated the next day after being criticized for telegraphing war plans and insisted that no final decision had been made.

Inside the briefing room laden with chandeliers, parquetry floors and gilded oil paintings, Ambassador Yakovenko outlined his concern about the dual crisis that have plunged Western relations with Russian Federation to lows not seen since the Cold War this week to the world's press.

The air strikes were limited in scope, lasting about an hour.

In April a year ago Trump ordered Tomahawk strikes on the Shayrat Airbase in response to a chemical weapons attack on rebel-held Khan Sheikhun.

Russian Federation has been deeply enmeshed in Syria's civil war since 2015 and Washington and Moscow have already indirectly clashed in the country.

"I hope hot heads will cool down and that will be it", he told reporters.
