Commonwealth Games 2018: WATCH shocking moment Callum Hawkins COLLAPSES in marathon

The Kiwi blitzed the competition to take home the top prize at Carrara Stadium

A marathon runner's dramatic collapse struck a sour note on the last day of the Commonwealth Games on Sunday as hosts Australia finished runaway winners on the medals table with 80 golds.

The temperature soared to near 30 degrees mid-morning on Sunday, taking a huge toll on the men's marathon competitors.

Reports were that Hawkins had initially refused medical treatment after falling a first time, for fear of disqualification.

"I'm just concerned for his welfare", he said. When I was coming down the home straight I tried to accelerate but I was just gone. He's going to hurt himself and there's nobody anywhere near.

Struggling with heat exhaustion, Hawkins eventually collapsed in a heap but only after a worldwide TV audience saw some of the most distressing video we've ever seen of visible athletics struggle.

This is a guy in real distress and someone needs to recognise it.

"Where on earth is the help?" he said. You can not just wait at the finish line - people get in distress further down the course. "I think it's disgraceful".

Marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe tweeted that there were "big questions" for the local organising committee and medical staff. The marshalls are there, they've got radios. "The athlete will always want to finish but isn't able to think rationally at that point". "You can't have medical people on every kilometer of the road".

He vacillated the next day after being criticized for telegraphing war plans and insisted that no final decision had been made. The measure - proposed by Russia, a key Syria ally - only got three votes: Russia, China and Bolivia.

In an earlier comment to the media, Peters said: "We need to check the facts out".

Bush said the athlete was left "exposed" and feels there should have been "more prompt attention to him".

As you know the worldwide rules are very clear in that an athlete has to declare themselves unfit to race (before they can receive any medical attention). "It got me going - when I was half way round and they said Callum was in the lead, I was thinking "I want to get to the end" so I could be part of the Scottish team and do the whole team proud".

'Australian public and tourists deciding to film Callum Hawkins on the floor instead of jumping over the barrier to try and help him, should be ashamed, ' one person posted on Twitter.

In the statement Peters said he "was concerned about the behaviour of a small number of bystanders who chose to take images".

"If you want it, you have to work for it", said the victor, who also secured 1500m silver on the Gold Coast.

There was an anxious wait before any assistance reached the stricken Hawkins, by which time Australia's Michael Shelley was passing the scene on his way to winning gold. "Fault is with organisers, medics and some spectators not with the other athletes", she said.

Team Scotland released a statement saying: "Callum has been taken to hospital for medical review following his collapse in the Marathon as is standard procedure".
