Warriors back to dominant selves, top Spurs 113-92 in Game 1

The Golden State Warriors opened their title defense in impressive fashion on Saturday night, blasting the San Antonio Spurs, 113-92, at the Oracle Arena.

Struggling to find a rhythm after going thru a period where all four of their All-Stars were sidelined with injuries going down the stretch, the Warriors took the floor against the same San Antonio franchise that they swept in last years Conference Finals, albeit a vastly different team as they've played all but nine games this season without their best player, Kawhi Leonard. Golden State held Spurs forward LaMarcus Aldridge (23.1 points per game this season) to only 14 points, with two rebounds.

Klay Thompson finished with 27 points and hit 5-of-6 from three, Durant had 24 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists, Draymond Green finished with 12 points and 11 assists, and McGee ended the game with 15 points.

The Golden State Warriors had something to prove all right: Oh yes, they plan to stay on top in these playoffs despite a disappointing finish to the regular season. "We have been here before in the postseason, and we know what it takes to win". "We wanted to get back to that, regardless of what everyone is saying: The Warriors have lost it, they are not together, they can't win without Steph, they're not the same team..."

Today's Spurs vs Warriors game is the first of four on the 2018 NBA Playoffs schedule and the only one televised on ABC.

Down 57-41 at halftime, the Spurs used two hoops by Rudy Gay early in the third period to get within 59-50.

San Antonio allowed the fewest points in the National Basketball Association this season (99.8 per game) and had held Golden State to a season-low 75 in the clubs' most recent meeting March 19 in San Antonio. Durant blended a mix of efficiency (9 of 17) and passing (seven assists) along with eight rebounds.

"I thought it was important to re-establish our defence, one way or another, win or lose", Kerr said. "They were more aggressive than us". Durant may be impossible to stop anyway, but that's not the Warriors' best offense.

With Aldridge on lockdown, the Warriors' D had accomplished its main mission, because the Spurs lack a secondary source of punch.

"They had more grunt, more physicality in the first quarter, and we looked like deer in the headlights", Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich said during his postgame press conference. Because that's what needs to happen for San Antonio. Warriors coach Steve Kerr started JaVale McGee at center and Andre Iguodala at point guard in surprise moves - he put his best defensive team on the floor to start - that worked to perfection.

"That's fair enough. Hats off to Golden State", Murray said. "The last month or so our defense had been subpar". They were on the playoffs.

I'm just teasing, jeez.

Miami led 60-56 at half-time but were unable to respond to a second-half onslaught from the in-form 76ers, who have now won 17 games straight.
