Vettel philosophical as Verstappen accepts blame for clash

Motor racing Rear gunner Raikkonen shoots for podium

On softer and fresher tyres after Red Bull made a strategic call to pit both its cars during the safety vehicle period, Verstappen was closing in on Vettel for the final podium place.

As the chaotic conclusion to the race unfolded, the Red Bulls charged through the field with fresh rubber taken at an opportunistic pit stop under the late Safety Car.

The FIA stewards gave Verstappen a 10-second time penalty that dropped him from fourth to fifth in the final results.

"We got it wrong, they got it right, and they deserved to win". I lost the rear twice, so I lost a bit of momentum in those places. "That was of course my fault", Verstappen told Sky Sports F1. I didn't want to compromise my race to the guys behind.

He was then asked if the incident was proof he needed to calm down and focus on the bigger picture in races, he said: "It's easy to comment that". At the moment it is not going the way I like of course, but does it mean I have to calm down?

"Obviously I wouldn't mind if it stays there, but I think it will be a tight race amongst the top three teams, and a long, tough race, but obviously it's good to start from the front". "I don't think I necessarily need to be less aggressive or anything because it has nothing to do with being overly aggressive".

Wolff also lamented the bad timing of the safety vehicle in hurting Valtteri Bottas' victory hopes, after the Finn managed to jump early leader Vettel in the pits.

Israel lauds US-led airstrikes on Syria as "appropriate" response
Asked how much advance warning Israel had received, an unnamed official told Reuters , "Between 12 and 24 hours, I believe". After some Israeli lawmakers came out in support of the missile strikes, Netanyahu's office issued a directive of silence.

Bottas followed Ricciardo home in second at the chequered flag, followed by Raikkonen, Hamilton, Verstappen, Hulkenberg, Alonso, Vettel, Sainz and Magnussen.

While Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo made a succession of moves with surgical precision to take the victory, Verstappen's attempts were much the opposite.

Vettel said he was not planning to defend his position hard, adding: "I didn't see him until very late". I left a bit of room as well. "Thank you guys, great qualifying, great vehicle", said Vettel, who also started the last race in Bahrain from pole, over the team radio.

"I had no intention to resist because it was clear with Daniel [Ricciardo] as well that there was no point doing so". They were just too fast on the fresh tyres.

"I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow that gap disappears and it's a very tight race".

"He did a mistake and locked up which happens. I guess he misjudged and sort of compromised both our results".

Vettel said that Verstappen was past the point where the Dutchman's relative inexperience could be seen as an excuse. "Inside the auto you must not forget that the judgements are very hard to make".
