US, France, UK launch strikes on Syria

Addressing the council, U.S. ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said the United States was confident that the military strikes had crippled Syria's chemical weapons program.

Now, Trump has abruptly deepened U.S. involvement in Syria, mustering a coalition of U.S., French and British forces to attack Syrian facilities related to production of chemical weapons after a poison gas attack last week killed dozens of people in Douma, Syria.

The Russian military claimed Syrian air defense systems had intercepted 71 Western missiles, though the Pentagon flatly dismissed the claim and said all missiles hit their targets. "It deters further attacks; it degrades the ability of the Syrian regime to conduct new attacks; and it's a way to support the ban on chemical weapons".

Trump praised Western air strikes against the Syrian government on Saturday as "perfectly executed", and added "Mission Accomplished".

"A lot has been destroyed in last night's strikes".

"Could not have had a better results" Trump tweeted.

"Mission Accomplished!" Mr. Trump declared. Still, the EU's goal is to prevent an escalation of the conflict, Mogherini said, calling for an immediate ceasefire and a "genuine political transition" in Syria.

On April 9, U.S. ambassador at the UN, Nikki Haley, says Washington is determined to "see the monster who dropped chemical weapons on the Syrian people is held to account". Pentagon officials said the assault pummeled, but did not eliminate the Syrian program.

The decision by the USA president, Donald Trump, to launch air strikes on Syria with backing from the United Kingdom and France has proved globally divisive, with some countries praising the military action while others condemned it as provocative and unacceptable.

Theresa May's Statement on the Syria Strike
May said the strikes would "also send a clear signal to anyone else who believes they can use chemical weapons with impunity". He also did not rule out future military action. "Bombing can not substitute for diplomacy", he said.

British opinion leaders question legality over strikes on Syria
Trump had also grown exasperated with Russian Federation for doing nothing to stop the Syrian government from using the weapons. Denying Assad that weapon with airstrikes may slow him down but is unlikely to threaten his grip.

"The goal of our actions tonight is to establish a strong deterrent against the production, spread and use of chemical weapons".

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he was going to hold meeting on Syria and the decisions on the U.S. response to the suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria will be made "fairly soon".

The United States is "locked and loaded" if Syria uses chemical weapons again, Ambassador Nikki Haley warned on Saturday, as the UN Security Council convened for an urgent session to discuss the joint military intervention in Syria.

A different Trump administration official, briefing reporters, said the United States assessed that sarin was also used in the April 7 attack but suggested that USA information on sarin came from analysis of reports from news media and other public sources of information, as opposed to US intelligence.

Israel, which was recently accused by Iran of carrying out its own airstrikes on military bases in Syria, was among the first to praise the strikes.

But the United States appears to have anticipated Russia's rhetoric and Defense Secretary James Mattis warned of "a significant disinformation campaign over the coming days by those who have aligned themselves with the Assad regime".

- Jeremy Corbyn criticised the Prime Minister, describing the action as legally questionable.

Defense officials from the countries involved in the attack gave differing accounts of how much warning was given to the Russians, Syria's powerful ally.

"We [Syria] are a state, the sovereignty of which has been violated by a permanent member of the UNSC", he said, adding that the worldwide community instead prefers to focus on some "minor details" of the situation in Syria.

"America does not seek an indefinite presence in Syria, under no circumstances", Trump said in his eight-minute address. The strikes were "limited, targeted and effective", the U.K.'s ambassador Karen Pierce said.
