Trump Declares 'Mission Accomplished!' After Airstrikes In Syria

Syria Damascus air strikes

After the US and allies sent 105 missiles to three Syrian sites that the Pentagon says were used to research, develop and store chemical weapons, one East Tennessean says the attacks are welcome by many Syrians, but that USA forces are not the key to peace in the Syria.

Although officials said the singular target was Assad's chemical weapons capability, his air force, including helicopters he allegedly has used to drop chemical weapons on civilians, were spared.

According to the White House, Trump and Macron affirmed in the call on Saturday that the joint airstrikes were "successful and necessary" to deter Syria from any further use of chemical weapons, Xinhua news agency reported.

Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the US did not coordinate targets with or notify the Russian government of the strikes, beyond normal airspace "de-confliction" communications.

The strikes are in response to a deadly chemical weapons attack earlier this week.

Pictures show the before and after images of a research centre and a chemical weapons bunker hit by missiles yesterday.

The third target, which was also near Homs, contained both a chemical weapons equipment storage facility and a command post.

Syria fired 40 unguided surface to air missiles - but only after the Western strikes had ended, the Pentagon said.

The center was leveled by 57 cruise missiles fired by US warships and submarines, and 19 long-range air-to-ground attack missiles fired from Air Force B-1 bombers, officials said. The United States and its allies "were not going to let that stand", she said, adding that Mr. Trump had told her that the United States was "locked and loaded" and ready to strike again should Syria use banned weapons again.

British Prime Minister Theresa May countered that little doubt existed that the Syrian government used a barrel bomb - large containers packed with fuel, explosives and metal scraps - to deliver the chemicals at Douma.

"Syria released video of the wreckage of a bombed-out research lab, but also of Assad arriving at work as usual, with the caption "Morning of resilience". NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the strikes were about making sure that chemical weapons can not be used with impunity.

"Chemical weapons are a threat to us all", Haley later added.

The military did not say whether any of the security forces were killed in the last few days. It did not disclose where and how the nine other militants were killed.

President Donald Trump declared "Mission Accomplished!" hours after joint strikes on Syria by the US and key allies, inviting immediate comparisons to President George W. Bush's early, misplaced optimism about the USA invasion of Iraq in 2003.

The Pentagon could not confirm how many missiles hit their targets. Syria has no chemical arsenal and has rejected any role in the suspected gas attack.

"We have developed the Syrian air defense system, and will improve it", Rudskoy said.

It comes after 100 USA and allied missiles targeted proported chemical weapons facilities in Homs and the Syrian capital of Damascus.

The United States, France and Britain defended their military action as legal during the Security Council meeting.

On Capitol Hill in Washington, however, the strikes ignited a fresh debate over the scope of the war on terror and just how far the Trump Administration can commit US forces to an undeclared war in the Middle East.

Syria agreed in 2013 to give up its chemical weapons after a nerve gas attack killed hundreds of people in Douma. "These are not the actions of a man; they are crimes of a monster instead", Trump said.

Mr Trump said "no amount of American blood or treasure can produce lasting peace and security in the Middle East".

Russian Federation has military forces, including air defenses, in several areas of Syria to support President Bashar Assad in his long war against anti-government rebels.

"We can not purge the world of evil or act every where, there is tyranny is a troubled place".

Protesters gathered in Chicago Saturday to condemn the United States' strike against Syria. The Russian ambassador to the U.S., Anatoly Antonov, condemned the airstrikes and warned that "such actions will not be left without consequences".
