Stormy Daniels cooperating with federal investigators following Cohen raid

Michael Cohen personal attorney for US President Donald Trump arrives to appear before Senate Intelligence Committee staff as the panel investigates alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election

Lawyers for President Donald Trump and his personal attorney, Michael Cohen, told a federal judge in NY on Friday that they believe some of the documents and devices seized from Cohen during an FBI raid are protected by attorney-client privilege, and they want a chance to review the items before prosecutors get to examine them.

Public corruption prosecutors in the USA attorney's office in Manhattan are trying to determine, according to one person familiar with the investigation, if there was any fraud related to payments to McDougal and Clifford. Cohen owns several medallions for New York City yellow cabs that allow them to pick up passengers on the street.

Prosecutors said they took the unusual step of raiding Cohen's residence and home rather than requesting records by subpoena because what they had learned led them to distrust he'd turn over what they had asked for.

The new details on the Cohen raid emerged as the president boiled over on Twitter about it and evidence that investigators are zeroing in on his inner circle.

"This court should not accept Cohen's invitation to make new law and convert a duly authorized search warrant into a subpoena", prosecutors said, calling it a "dangerous precedent" to let defense lawyers delay a probe "in a case of national interest".

According to the Post, which cited an unnamed source, the Federal Bureau of Investigation raid on Cohen's office was not only in search of information on what part he played in payoffs to two women who claimed they had affairs with the president - but also for his dealings with New York-based Sterling National Bank on his taxi medallions.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley says it would be political "suicide" for President Donald Trump to fire special counsel Robert Mueller.

"And an attorney who breaks the relationship between attorney and client while facing criminal charges himself is not the most likable witness", Trusty said. Rosenstein has repeatedly said he has not seen any reason to dismiss Mueller.

The raids followed a referral by US Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 US elections, a probe that has expanded to include looking into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow. Acting with a search warrant, the raid was carried out at least in part based on a referral from Mueller's team to a federal prosecutor in NY.

Trump, Cohen spoke Friday as feds look into seized recordings, sources say
Ms Daniels says the statement portrays her as a liar, while Mr Cohen says it was hyperbole and, more importantly, accurate. Michael Cohen has that nearly doubled - not only did he not grow up in Manhattan, he didn't grow up in New York City".

Trump called the raid against his lawyer an "attack on our country in a true sense".

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents who conducted the raids were seeking information on payments to Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal, who also claims to have had a sexual relationship with Trump, a person familiar with the matter has said.

The GOP whip says lawmakers are letting the White House know that firing Mueller "would be a mistake" as Trump fumes over the Federal Bureau of Investigation raid of his personal attorney's home and office.

Both officials said the lawyers fear they have made little or no progress.

Agents raided the office of Trump's personal attorney Michael Cohen on Monday, seizing records on topics including a $130,000 payment made to porn actress Stormy Daniels.

Daniels, whose legal name is Stephanie Clifford, has sued Cohen to be released from a nondisclosure agreement over an alleged one-night stand with Trump in 2006.

Cohen said he was not reimbursed by the Trump campaign or the Trump Organization, and President Trump said he did not know about the payment or where the money came from.

Cohen says he's still loyal to the president but he would have handled the payment differently because of how it has affected his family.
