Salah reaches 40 goals as Liverpool breeze past Bournemouth

Roberto Firmino celebrates after scoring in the Champions League match between Manchester City and Liverpool at the Etihad

Salah scored his 40th goal of the season in all competitions during Liverpool's 3-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday.

However, the hosts didn't have to wait much longer to strike an early advantage as Mane opened the scoring, converting at the second attempt after his header from Henderson's pinpoint ball was initially saved by Asmir Begovic.

By the end, Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino had taken their collective tally to 82 goals for the season and broken the 300 mark under Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool had beaten Premier League champions-elect Manchester City 5-1 on aggregate in the Champions League quarter-finals and, four days after their second-leg victory at the Etihad Stadium, they were equally impressive to Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe.

"Thirty-one years ago since Ian Rush scored over 40 goals?"

By full-time, Liverpool had monopolised the ball with 618 passes to the visitors' 375 as they eased down with the outcome assured.

Sometimes it is easy to forget how Liverpool's attack is about more than just Mohamed Salah.

Salah reaches 40 goals as Liverpool breeze past Bournemouth

Before Saturday, Julian Dicks was the last Liverpool player to score at Anfield on the day of a Grand National, in 1994, but Salah's appearance on the scoresheet against Bournemouth had an air of inevitability about it.

However, while it took Rush 65 games to reach his total, Salah has now played 20 fewer games.

"The counter-pressing was outstanding from the boys today". "But mostly we controlled it and did really well". It's like, 'Give it [to] him.' We have to mix it up a little bit.

The Merseyside outfit should have gone into the break two goals to the good but Mane squandered a cross from Dejan Lovren when he headed just wide of the goal in the last minute of the first half.

"We had chances after that, didn't take them and the third goal was unfair on us".

With four league matches and at least two legs of a Champions League semi-final remaining, Salah now has club great Rush's all-time Liverpool season-record haul of 47 goals, achieved during the 1983-'84 campaign, in his sights. After the City game, you have to concentrate more because you usually know how it [can go].

Mane is now the outright top scoring Senegalese player in Premier League history, netting 44 goals in the competition and eclipsing Demba Ba (43). He played one game, the next game rested, then played another game and then the next game rested and stuff like that.
