Amid the growing outcry over the horrific rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district, two Jammu and Kashmir ministers, belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party, were forced to quit after it emerged that they had attended a rally in support of the alleged rapists.

Singh served as the minister for forest in the BJP-PDP government in the state, while Ganga held the ministry for commerce and industries. After that, it will be sent to the Chief Minister to the same.

According to BJP sources, the resignation of the two ministers is likely to be accepted.

Mufti apprised them of the situation and requested them for their intervention to defuse the political crisis brewing in the state over the Kathua rape case, they said.

The BJP General Secretary said the development would have no bearing on the alliance as both the parties were working in coordination.

The Bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud took suo motu notice of the matter on being told that the lawyers of two associations had prevented a lady lawyer from appearing for the victim's family.

The spokesman said that it was reiterated in the meeting that demanding CBI investigation into the case doesn't tantamount to shielding the real accused.

Jammu and Kashmir Minister Chandra Prakash Ganga, who resigned after drawing criticism for allegedly participating in a rally in support of the accused in the Kathua rape and murder case, on Saturday (April 14) said that there was no pressure on him to quit.

In a major climbdown, senior BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Nirmal Singh expressed satisfaction over the investigation of the Crime Branch in the rape and murder case. "We would never tolerate such divisive forces who are trying to give a communal colour to Aasifa case". They made the two ministers resign. "That is also a confidence-building measure". "Everybody is equal for me", Lal said. Anger erupted this week when details of her ordeal were released in a police charge sheet. The girl had disappeared from a spot near her house on January 10.

Her attackers, which included temple official and policemen, drugged and gang raped her over days before finally killing her and dumping her body in a forest nearby, seven days later.

The United Nations has voiced its outrage over the brutal rape and murder in Indian-Held Kashmir, of Asifa Bano, an 8-year-old Muslim girl, and called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
