'Explosions' rock Syria area hosting Iran-backed fighters

The air strikes at multiple targets began around 9:00 pm Eastern Time (0100 GMT) and saw US, French and British assets firing missiles at the Bashar Assad regime's chemical production facilities.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei denounced the airstrikes on Syria as a "crime".

The tripartite military action from the United States, France and Britain was created to set back or destroy Syria's chemical weapons program, the three countries said, and deter any further use in violation of global norms.

The Russian embassy in the USA released a statement saying "We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences", adding that Washington, Paris and London will be held accountable for them.

Western powers carried out their biggest attack on Assad's regime before dawn on Saturday with strikes on targets they said were linked to Syria's chemical weapons program.

In a televised speech from the White House, Trump said "To Iran, and to Russian Federation, I ask: What kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women and children?"

In the meantime, in a telephone conversation with the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Rouhani said that such attacks run counter to the principles of worldwide law and are considered a blatant support for terrorism, according to Press TV.

The military did not say whether any of the security forces were killed in the last few days. It did not disclose where and how the nine other militants were killed.

The key to understanding what is going does not lie in the Israel-Russia relationship, but in the déjà vu Cold War dynamic that has engulfed Israeli actions in Syria.

In late 2017, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: "Iran wants to establish itself militarily in Syria, right next to Israel".

The United States and its European allies early Saturday launched airstrikes on Syrian research, development and military facilities in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack last weekend near Damascus that killed at least 40 people.

Russia, another major supporter of the Assad regime, has also denounced the US -led airstrikes.

The Syrian government has strongly denied the allegations.

In the early hours of Monday morning, Israel struck the T-4 airbase in Syria with eight cruise missiles fired from Israeli F-15s, killing fourteen people including seven Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps soldiers.

The military said the February 10 incident over the northern town of Beit Shean marked the first time Iran has tried to directly strike Israel, rather than working through its close ally, the Lebanese Hizballah militia, or other proxies. Iran-backed Hezbollah, which has an extensive missile arsenal, last fought a war with Israel in 2006.
