CWG 2018: Saina Nehwal beats PV Sindhu to clinch gold

Saina Nehwal vs PV Sindhu in Women's Singles Badminton Finals India to Gold & Silver Medals at CWG 2018 on Sunday

Indian star Saina Nehwal defeated compatriot P.V. Sindhu by straight games to win the women's singles title in the badminton competition at the 21st Commonwealth Games (CWG) here on Sunday, April 15. He lost 21-19, 14-21, 14-21 to Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei to seal India's 19th silver and 65th medal overall in this edition.

In a tense final, the Delhi 2010 champion staged a second-game comeback against Sindhu, the Olympic silver-medallist, to grasp a thrilling victory 21-18, 23-21.

The two Bronze medals were won in Table-Tennis.

Saina was sacked up and played with power and aggression to put Sindhu under pressure right from the start. The tactic was based on the weakness of Li at the forecourt and at the net and it worked well for Sindhu, as she set up the Canadian with impeccable drop shots and low placements, before finishing points at her will with powerful smashes. On the other hand, Sindhu was struggling to control the pace of the rallies as her opponent either kept the shuttle deep or on the downward trajectory and did it with unerring consistency.

Saina then narrowed the gap after winning three back to back points. The two contrasting styles of the two shuttlers made for an exhilarating contest.

Saina Nehwal returns to Canada's Rachel Honderich.

On Sunday, she began with a flourish, went for the big smashes each time the opportunity presented itself and raced to a 11-6 lead.

Saina's court coverage was also the more impressive of the two. By the end, it literally seemed Saina was toying with Sindhu in the buildup of the turn around in the second game. But to Sindhu's credit, she too exhibited a better command on her smashes and improved considerably court-coverage to take a 9-7 lead, which she widened to 13-8 after the break. It turned out to be a one-sided affair as Saina showed aggression to outplay her fellow national. The see-saw battle continued when Sindhu hit one out to give Saina the equalising point yet again.

What time is the CWG 2018 badminton singles final between PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal? But there was no stopping Nehwal who closed the game in 21 minutes.

Saina was dominating from the beginning taking a lead of 11-6 over Sindhu. Serving for the gold, Saina forced a wide stroke from Sindhu and then let out a scream to celebrate the triumph.

It took Srikanth just eight minutes to go from being 0-4 down to be 10-7 ahead.

Nehwal, meanwhile, took an hour and five minutes to close out her game.

The match started with Lee going full throttle, putting his aggressive game on display, as he smashed his way to a 5-0 lead. The smashes that were landing outside in the opening game became just the bit accurate and hard for the Indian to retrieve.
