Zuckerberg Testimony Doesn't Change Our View on Facebook

Zuckerberg Testimony Doesn't Change Our View on Facebook

It's not people's fault if they don't know how Facebook works.

"Facebook hearings demonstrate that concerns remain over compliance with rigorous European Union data privacy standards", Tajani said in a tweet Thursday. "I was informed that Facebook is planning an extensive audit on all those apps, but that it will take a long time", Jourova said.

"Zuckerberg's testimony demonstrated that the company has matured over the last decade, in particular in his acknowledgement that Facebook is responsible for the content shared on its platform", said University of DE communications professor Dannagal Young. And all of a sudden I start receiving advertisements for chocolate.

That's a fairly popular narrative these days in the wake of the big American online social media and networking company's direct role in the Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal. The social media site has more than 2 billion users along with access to all your pictures, videos, comments, what you share, what you like, your location and other information regarding anything you do.

While Facebook continues to insist that this remains an "opt-in" feature, the fact is that the app's set-up process doesn't really clarify that at first glance.

Zuckerberg told the Senate on Tuesday that the company has been working with Mueller in his Russian Federation probe and apologized over and over again for the company's handling of data privacy.

House lawmakers were a bit tougher on Zuckerberg than their colleagues in the Senate, many of whom seemed confused by the company and what it does.

But clearly, their technical expertise leaves much to be desired, that we can't take their digital literacy for granted (that's why they have advisors who, one would hope, know a bit more).

Perhaps these are the wrong reasons for outrage, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be outraged. People own their own data, as far as he sees it.

About a year ago, a new usage of the photo-sharing platform Instagram was introduced.

Apple launches red iPhone 8 and 8 Plus to help fight Aids
Last year, another employee was sacked for leaking details about the iPhone X , iPad Pro, and AirPods to 9to5Mac. Apple had previously denied any plans around possibly killing its service but, as of last month that changed.

Some of the lawmakers talked to Zuckerberg, 33, as they would their children or grandchildren, and were occasionally befuddled by the complexities of his company.

"Senator, I want to make sure I get this accurate, so it would probably be better to have my team follow up afterwards", Zuckerberg replied.

The discussion with Sandberg had been "constructive and open", Jourova said.

"Perhaps the most important revelation of Zuckerberg's testimony are the glaring gaps in our lawmakers' understanding of the internal logic and business model of Facebook", Young said.

House Energy and Commerce Chairman Greg Walden said the committee will look at what could be done.

Democrat Bobby Rush was in the process of asking Mr Zuckerberg when he learned that Facebook allowed advertisers prevent ads from being shown to certain minority groups, a possible violation of civil rights laws.

Whether Facebook will change users' default settings to minimize the collection and use of their data.

Zuckerberg may deflect the attention of Congress, but there's no ducking the judgment of other tech executives who also rely on data to build their businesses. At the very least, we should expect some answers as to why Facebook has been able to get away with harvesting data from users that haven't consented, unless Zuckerberg continues to flawless the deflection techniques he's seemingly getting good at.

The company does this by using different techniques integrated into pages around the web.

Some analysts said Zuckerberg's appearance suggests a new path forward for social media under closer scrutiny.
