Trump's personal attorney tells ABC News FBI raids were 'respectful' and 'courteous'

Michael Cohen personal attorney for US President Donald Trump arrives to appear before Senate Intelligence Committee staff as the panel investigates alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election

President Trump's personal attorney Michael D. Cohen asked a federal judge Friday to bar federal prosecutors from reviewing material seized from his office until his lawyers or an outside attorney can examine them first.

The investigation reportedly revolves around Cohen's personal "business dealings", not his work for Trump or other legal clients.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents seized Cohen's computers and phones in a raid that sought, among other records, all communications between Cohen and Trump and his campaign aides. "I just heard that they broke into the office of one of my personal attorneys, a good man", Trump began, referring to agents who had obtained search warrants from a federal judge.

Angry after the raid, the president tweeted "Attorney-client privilege is dead". Last week, Trump said he did not know about the payment.

"It's an attack on our country in a true sense", he said, flanked by the nation's top military brass, who watched the scene stone-faced.

It also establishes a protective barrier between Mueller and one of the seedier Trump scandals. He bought a building for $2 million at 172 Rivington Street in New York City in 2011 and sold it for $10 million three years later, according to property records.

Elliott Broidy told RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel on Friday afternoon that he was stepping down, a person familiar with the discussion said.

Trump expressed outrage after the Federal Bureau of Investigation raid earlier this week, calling it a "disgraceful situation" and a "total witch-hunt" during his off-the-cuff remarks to reporters.

Watchdog confirms Skripal poisoned with nerve agent
London promptly accused Moscow of orchestrating a deadly attack with what United Kingdom experts claim was the A234 nerve agent. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has also said: "Even if it's Novichok , about 20 countries produced it".

Cohen's lawyer, Stephen M. Ryan, said on Monday prosecutors seized communications between Cohen and his clients based in part on a referral by Mueller. He has not responded to news he is under investigation, declining to comment when contacted by ABC News.

Both Trump and Moscow deny any wrongdoing.

FILE - Special Counsel Robert Mueller departs after a closed-door meeting with members of the Senate Judiciary Committee about Russian meddling in the election and possible connection to the Trump campaign, at the Capitol in Washington, June 21, 2017.

The raids followed a referral by US Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who for almost a year has been looking into whether Trump's presidential campaign colluded with Russian Federation. Will the President fire him, and, perhaps, add to whatever obstruction-of-justice case Mueller is already building? Lindsey Graham said he didn't know the objective of Mueller's raid on Cohen, but added, "I just want to let Mr. Mueller do his job without any political interference".

The raids on attorney Michael Cohen represent a dramatic escalation of a federal inquiry led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election and possible collusion by Trump campaign aides.

In response to Cohen's motion to prevent prosecutors from using evidence collected in Monday's raids of his home and office, the United States attorney in NY asserted the raids were authorized by a federal judge to seek evidence of conduct "for which Cohen is under criminal investigation".

The Justice Department's interest in Cohen appears to be connected to his efforts to silence two women, in the run-up to the 2016 election, who claimed to have had affairs with Trump. But the Post says that it is unknown if Cohen ever taped conversations between himself and Mr. Trump.
