Theresa May's Statement on the Syria Strike

Oh what a lovely war! Thought of Syria strikes galvanizes breathless British media

Alexander Yakovenko, the Russian ambassador to London, said the White Helmets, a British-funded civil defense force, were responsible for staging fake chemical attacks.

"It is about a limited and targeted strike that does not further escalate tensions in the region and that does everything possible to prevent civilian casualties".

In a press conference on the Syria attack this morning, Mrs May said Britain can not allow the use of chemical weapons to be normalised.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said that four RAF Tornado jets were deployed to launch missiles at a Syrian military facility.

"While the full assessment of the strike is ongoing, we are confident of its success", she added.

May has repeatedly said that the missile strike on Syria was not about "regime change".

Russia, which intervened in the war in 2015 to back Assad, has denied there was a chemical attack and has accused Britain of helping to stage the Douma incident to stoke anti-Russian hysteria.

Russia's Defence Ministry said on Friday that Britain was involved faking a suspected chemical weapons attack in the Syrian town of Douma.

Over 100 missiles were fired on the morning of Saturday, April 14, targeting what representatives of coalition forces called chemical weapons sites in retaliation for an earlier poison gas attack.

May said the strikes would "also send a clear signal to anyone else who believes they can use chemical weapons with impunity".

I have done so because I judge this action to be in Britain's national interest.

Prime Minister Theresa May during a press conference in 10 Downing Street, London on the air strikes against Syria.

"Theresa May should have sought parliamentary approval, not trailed after Donald Trump", Corbyn said.

May is not obliged to win parliament's approval before ordering military action, but a non-binding constitutional convention to do so has been established since a 2003 vote on joining the US -led invasion of Iraq.

"As we have seen in the past, inaction has its consequences - so PM right to join forces with our allies to take targeted & appropriate action".

He also did not rule out future military action.

"Bombing can not substitute for diplomacy", he said.

The targets included a Syrian center in the greater Damascus area for the research, development, production, and testing of chemical and biological weaponry as well as a chemical weapons storage facility near the city of Homs.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement that Canada stands with its allies and that it supports the decision " to take action to degrade the Assad regime's ability to launch chemical weapons attacks against its own people".

Mrs May said chemical weapons had "all too often" been used in recent times.
