Teachers Not Done Now That Walkout Is Over

The union representing teachers who work for Oklahoma City Public Schools had asked the district to close schools Monday because an online survey to gauge interest in ending walkout participation was compromised, officials said Friday.

"Because of the members of the Oklahoma Education Association and the overwhelming support by the public, we were able to secure $479 million dollars in education funding", Priest said.

With almost 40,000 members, the Oklahoma Education Association represents many, but not all of the state's teachers.

Oklahoma lawmakers approved a $6,100 teacher pay raise at the end of March 2018.

Ed Allen, president of the Oklahoma City American Federation of Teachers, said his members would vote Thursday night on how to proceed. "We went very "tiger mom" in the 1990s and 2000s, and we saw the problems that were happening with our kids with burnout and stress and anxiety".

"They've been out for two weeks, and it's time for them to get back to school". Instruction expenditures include activities directly associated with the interaction between teachers and students, including teacher salaries and benefits, supplies (such as textbooks), and purchased instructional services, according to public school district fiscal data from the National Center for Education Statistics.

"It's kind of been evolving since then and I mean I know there are some other schools out there in Missouri that's already done this so we're just trying to do what we can to protect our students and provide the best education environment as possible", said Seibert.

On the fifth day of the strike, Priest offered to end it if the Legislature passed bills eliminating a capital gains tax exemption and Governor Mary Fallin vetoed a bill repealing a hotel and motel tax. "The presence and persistence of Oklahoma educators and supporters have brought the largest pay raise in state history to teachers, a line-item raise for support professionals for only the second time in history, and $70 million in recurring revenue for classrooms". Now marriages hope to disperse the communication that conservative guidelines lead that teachers and mothers and fathers are protesting. The teachers' union also wanted that number to be higher. "I feel like it's a cop-out - we have let them win by showing them they can behave however they want and we'll eventually get exhausted and go home".

Crooked Oak High School English teacher Amanda Jeffers says she was inspired to run by the education movement, even though she acknowledges an uphill battle against a well-funded Republican incumbent. "As many as we can get", Morejon said.

Oklahoma teachers said additional spending was needed to improve deteriorating school facilities and outdated school supplies.

Oppel said some teachers were eager to remain at the Capitol, especially as there is talk the Legislature might consider taxes increase on wind energy production, potentially raising new revenue for schools.
