Russian Federation asks United States to solve problems at 'negotiating table'

Trump announced Wednesday that he meant to launch a missile strike against the Sryian regime of Bashar al-Assad, retaliation for the government's alleged use of chemical weapons on a civilian population in a suburb of Damascus last weekend.

Trump said the strikes were meant to deter the use of chemical weapons like the attack on civilians in the Syrian town of Douma last week, and that the US was prepared to continue the attacks until the Syrian regime stops using chemical weapons.

The United States, France and Britain together launched military strikes in Syria to punish President Bashar Assad for a suspected chemical attack against civilians and to deter him from doing it again, President Donald Trump announced Friday.

"We are prepared to sustain this response until the Syrian regime stops its use of prohibited chemical agents", Trump said in remarks from the White House.

"This massacre was a significant escalation in a pattern of chemical weapons use by that very bad regime", the president said of the April 7 incident.

Earlier on Thursday, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad warned the West against attacking Syria, saying accusations about the suspected chemical attack on Douma were "fabricated".

The strike came as Trump has alluded to military action in Syria all week, even tweeting on Wednesday that Russian Federation should be "ready" because "nice and new and "smart" missiles "will be coming".

Reuters reported that six huge explosions were observed in Damascus. "Syrian state TV says the attack has begun on the capital, though it wasn't immediately clear what was targeted", the AP wrote.

A second witness said the Barzah district of Damascus had been hit in the strikes.

The first target was a scientific research center in the greater Damascus area, where research, development, and production, and testing of chemical and biological "warfare technology" was being conducted.

"Yes, it has happened", she said.

In a statement, the ministry said it believed the base was where the Assad regime was keeping "chemical weapon precursors" stockpiled in breach of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

At a Pentagon briefing, Dunford said the latest air strikes were planned to minimise the risk of casualties among Russia's forces in Syria.

EARLIER: US President Donald Trump has confirmed "precision strikes" against Syria are underway.

The president again said that he supported the withdrawal of USA forces.

"America does not seek an indefinite presence in Syria", Trump said from the White House.

"It has reduced the regime's ability to use chemical weapons in the future and sends a clear and strong message that the use of chemical weapons will not be tolerated by the worldwide community", Ms Payne told reporters in Sydney.

Secretary of Defense James Mattis echoed the President when he told lawmakers Thursday, "We have not yet made any decision to launch military attacks into Syria".

Reuters quoted a USA official as saying the strikes were aimed at multiple targets and involved Tomahawk missiles.

He spoke with his British and French counterparts Thursday evening regarding a possible military response. But after being criticized for apparently telegraphing USA intentions, Trump on Thursday attempted to blur the timing of any potential airstrikes on Syria.

In that strike, on April 7, 2017, the US launched 59 cruise missiles on a Syrian military airbase.

Russian Federation and Syria have denied any involvement in the alleged chemical attack.

Asked about possible USA strikes on Syria, President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday that "it's necessary to avoid any steps that may fuel tensions in Syria".
