Hearings Show Congress Doesn't Understand Facebook Well Enough To Regulate It

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says his Facebook data was included in the personal information sold to malicious third parties, a reference to the Cambridge Analytica scandal that has rocked his company over the past several weeks.

"Yes or no", asked Sen.

Then the congressman took us down an Alice in Wonderland-style rabbit hole, where people who do not use Facebook are told to log in to their Facebook accounts to find out what data Facebook holds on them. "We don't do that".

There's no official word from Facebook about whether they will launch a new add-free platform but their website continues to advise users that it won't charge.

Ideally, the company should look to broaden its governance horizons, by seeking to truly engage in consultation and reform with Facebook's stakeholders - its users - as well as the civil society groups and regulatory bodies that seek to empower users in these spaces. The fallout from the scandal also precipitated Mark Zuckerberg's appearance before the US Congress this week. With the first hearing on Tuesday and the second on Wednesday, Zuckerberg confessed a variety of ways Facebook has misused user data.

"I think there is some cause for concern but rest assured that the U.S. will not allow Facebook to fail for the simple reason that Facebook is one of their success stories".

VideoTeenage Aussie boxer Taylah Robertson was assured a medal on the Gold Coast , without even throwing a punch. Bouts are awarded on the basis of technical superiority when a wrestler takes a lead of 10 or more points.

But why are there so many videos of people claiming to have proved Facebook is listening? Over the two days, the value of Zuckerberg's stake in the company grew about $US3 billion ($NZ4 billion). Or as Zuckerberg admits, Facebook didn't do enough to guard against downstream consequences. So, to put those numbers into better perspective, that means around 36.38 million people in the United States have deleted the Facebook phone app, while 19.26 million have deleted their accounts altogether. And most importantly, consumers should have the right to keep their information private, be alerted when a data breach has occurred, and be informed of the remedies available to them when their personal information is compromised.

Plan II freshman Ross Trivisonno said though he was angered about the data leak, it would take much more for him to delete Facebook, a necessity on par with email or text for him.

Facebook is addressing the debate about why and how Messenger and Messenger Lite apps had access to the call and message logs of Android phone users.

He said the company made big changes in the platform in 2014 that have prevented this specific situation with Cambridge Analytica from occurring again.

Meanwhile, Cambridge Analytica began cleaning up its own mess, announcing their CEO would step down to "focus on the various technical investigations and inquiries".

Facebook is often quite deliberate in its characterisations of "your data", rejecting the notion that it "owns" user data. "Of course, if this sentiment were to be similar across other countries, 15% of 2 billion users is a sizable chunk of the installed base that would disappear".
